Crystals of calcium methanesulphonate, Ca(CHaSO3) 2, are orthorhombic, space group Pbca, with a = 17.323 (2), b = 10129 (1), c = 9.220 (2) A and Z = 8. The Mo K~ intensities were collected on a four-circle Nonius CAD-4 diffractometer and the structure was determined by means of the symbolic addition procedure. The anisotropic full-matrix least-squares method was used: the final R was 0031 for thc 1899 measured reflexions. Each Ca atom is surrounded by an octahedral arrangement of six O atoms belonging to six different methanesulphonato groups. Thus each O atom of one methanesulphonato group is bound to a different Ca atom. In the octahedron the Ca -O bond lengths are between 2 285 (4) and 2 339 (4) A.
