Role structure and analysis of the family

F. Ivan Nye

A solution to get the problem off, have you found it? Really? What kind of solution do you resolve the problem? From what sources? Well, there are so many questions that we utter every day. No matter how you will get the solution, it will mean better. You can take the reference from some books. And the role structure and analysis of the family is one book that we really recommend you to read, to get more solutions in solving this problem.

Family Size, Interaction, Affect and Stress.

F. Ivan Nye

This paper brings together previous research on the relationship of family size to family relationships and attitudes. It reduces the rather diverse findings to four propositions dealing with affect, interaction and stress. It submits these propositions to additional tests utilizing secondary data from two large surveys. Finally, these data are shown to support some and question other generalizations of group size obtained from research with laboratory groups. Substantively families of three or four children rank lower in all of the analyses than do families with one or two children, even with social class constant. Large families with five or more children rank lower than one or two-child families in all analyses but in some analyses they rank higher than families with three or four children.

Is Choice and Exchange Theory the Key

F. Ivan Nye

As societies become more complex, with greater and greater division of labor, and as they change more and more rapidly, the need for a valid theory of human behavior increases. As the behavioral sciences proliferate, with larger and larger numbers of researchers, practitioners and program directors, the sheer volume of research and programs calls for general principles which can be utilized in their systematization. With these increases, intellectual and policy confusion grows apace, and the need for general theory to guide research, ameliorative programs and administrative decisions becomes ever more urgent. Research and programs based on personal hunches and/or ad hoc theorizing seem to lead nowhere except to greater confusion-a confusion which can hardly continue indefinitely.

Family Mini Theories as Special Instances of Choice and Exchange Theory

F. Ivan Nye

One of the virtues of theory is parsimony; in fact, one might argue that the principal advantage of a theory is this characteristic of stating complex relationships. If one accepts this assumption, then it follows that science should have as few theories as possible, provided the lesser number provide as much explanation as a larger number. Turning to the substantive domain of family relationships and the family institution, we note that a number of mini theories have developed over a period of years. These are largely unrelated to each other and, in some instances, it appears that their explanatory potential could be increased by integrating them into a general theory.

Emerging and Declining Family Roles.

F. Ivan Nye

The assumption that the family as an institution is experiencing a continuous and rapid loss of functions is challenged. Instead, the institution is seen as assuming new sets of responsibilities in the areas of sexual intercourse, recreation, and therapeutic services. These responsibilities are conceptualized as new roles in the positions of parent and spouse. The reverse process is seen in the decline of the norms ascribing housekeeper and kinship duties to family members. Initial data from a sample of210 couples, parents of children in the third grade, provide support for the above thesis of changes in the family institution.

Values, Family, and a Changing Society

F. Ivan Nye

The subconcepts of instrumental value and intrinsic value are developed to deal with properties valued only or primarily because they are efficient means to ends and those which are valued for themselves without regard to consequences which flow from them. Instrumental values are seen as changing with the changing effectiveness of various aspects of family structure and interaction. The latent consequences of changes in structure and interaction are seen as major considerations in speeding family or other social change.

Family Life Education in Florida Public High Schools

Alan E. Bayer; F. Ivan Nye

Family life education in the South has received little study. In order to establish empirical data which will be comparable to research in other regions of the country and which will provide an objective basis on which to judge the present status of family life education, the authors have investigated the administrative provisions for family life education in Florida high schools, subjects and topics taught in family life courses, characteristics and qualifications of family life teachers, and teaching methods employed in family life courses. It is concluded that the improvement of high school family life programs and a more thorough training of family life teachers appear warranted.
