The coordinate space formulation of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) method enables self-consistent treatment of mean field and pairing in weakly bound systems whose properties are affected by the particle continuum space. Of particular interest are neutron-rich, deformed drip-line nuclei which can exhibit novel properties associated with neutron skin. To describe such systems theoretically, we developed an accurate 2D lattice Skyrme-HFB solver HFB-AX based on B-splines. Compared to previous implementations, we made a number of improvements aimed at boosting the solvers performance. These include: explicit imposition of axiality and space inversion, use of the modified Broydens method to solve self-consistent equations, and a partial parallelization of the code. HFB-AX has been benchmarked against other HFB solvers, both spherical and deformed, and the accuracy of the B-spline expansion was tested by employing the multi-resolution wavelet method. Illustrative calculations are carried out for stable and weakly bound nuclei at spherical and very deformed shapes, including constrained fission pathways. In addition to providing new physics insights, HFB-AX can serve as a useful tool to assess the reliability and applicability of coordinate-space and configuration-space HFB solvers, both existing and in development.

The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope Dy-168 has been studied using multinucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV Se-82 beam and an Er-170 target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2(+) and 4(+) members of the previously measured ground-state rotational band of Dy-168 have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10(+). A tentative candidate for the 4(+) -> 2(+) transition in Dy-170 was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of total Routhian surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed. We employed the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model to investigate the density distributions and their dependence on nuclear shapes and isospins in the superheavy mass region. Different Skyrme forces were used for the calculations with a special comparison to the experimental data in Pb-208. The ground-state deformations, nuclear radii, neutron-skin thicknesses and alpha-decay energies were also calculated. Density distributions were discussed with the calculations of single-particle wave functions and shell fillings. Calculations show that deformations have considerable effects on the density distributions, with a detailed discussion on the (292)120 nucleus. Earlier predictions of remarkably low central density are not supported when deformation is allowed for.

In this thesis the properties of unbound nuclei like 12,13Li are studiedby extending the multistep shell model to the complex energy plane. Thenuclei 12Li and 13Li are described starting from the one-particle states in 10Liand two-particle states in 11Li. The ground state of 12Li is found to be anantibound state. No bound or antibound state is found in 13Li. It is alsoshown that the odd proton plays a minor role in these nuclei. This framework is also applied to study the recently proposed spin-alignedproton-neutron pair coupling scheme. For this the MSM is extended to theproton-neutron space as well as the isospin space. In the model, a nonorthogonalbasis is introduced, which allows us to identify simultaneously theroles played by all configurations. The four-particle, six-particle and eightparticlenuclei in the heaviest N = Z region are evaluated using the MSMbasis within the space spanned by the single 0g9/2 hole shell.A novel Monte Carlo representation in the complex energy plane is alsodeveloped for studying nuclear excitations in the continuum. The calculationson realistic potentials show a stable performance and high accuracy in the oneparticleand two-particle cases. This will provide a convenient tool to studyopen systems with many nucleons in the continuum.
