The breakdown thresholds of bare surfaces of KC1 windows treated in different ways were measured with a gain-switched-pulse CO 2 laser at 10.6 μm. The studies indicated that grinding abrasive grain size and moisten-cooling liquid determine the destructed layer depth and the breakdown threshold for freshly polished KC1 surfaces. The ageing of these samples decreases breakdown thresholds considerably. The high-temperature baking of KC1 samples before final polishing increases the surface breakdown threshold up to bulk damage for freshly polished and twice for aged samples as compared with those unbaked.
