FIRST written in 1897, the monograph from which the following extracts are derived was not published owing to the authors continued absence on service. Some three-quarters of the work have been cut out for the purposes of this paper. The original dealt also with the historical and clinical aspects of the disease, the morbid anatomy and pathology, as well as with the bacteriology and the preparation of antitoxin. As far as necessary the subjectmatter has been altered to bring it up to date.
