Abstract Differential cross sections have been measured for K − + p → π − + Ω and K − + p → π − + Y ∗ + (1385) at 8 and 16 GeV/c and at small momentum transfer, using the missing mass spectrometer technique. The cross sections continue to be a factor of two higher than those for the corresponding associated production reactions obtained by line reversal, in disagreement with exchange degeneracy.

Abstract We have built and tested a cylindrical multiwire proportional chamber with dual coordinate readout from the anode wires. The azimuthal coordinate is obtained in the conventional way, the axial one by charge division with a resolution of Δl / l = 0.4% fwhm. The prototype chamber is 75 cm in diameter and 100 cm high and consists of two thin foil cathodes, two Mylar gas windows and a central anode wire plane with a total mass of 21 mg/cm 2 .

Abstract We describe the construction and performance of the vertex spectrometer in the Multiparticle Argo Spectrometer System (MASS) used at Brookhaven. Nine digitized cylindrical wire spark chambers, surrounding a hydrogen target and operating in a 10 kG magnetic field, detected most charged particles with high efficiency up to multiplicities of 12.

Abstract We have looked for strangeness +1 baryons, Z ∗ s, in the reaction π − + p → K − + Z ∗ . Peaks at missing masses of about 1590 MeV and 1950 MeV are interpreted as reflections of boson decays and upper limits have been assigned for Z ∗ production.

Abstract This paper describes the design and performance of a wire spark chamber spectrometer system connected on-line to a PDP-6 computer. The system analyzes particles of 5 to 30 GeV/ c momentum scattered at angles from 0 to 15° with a momentum resolution of 0.5% and an angular resolution of 0.5 mrad. The chambers can be sparked every 1.25 msec and the computer can analyze up to 150 events in the 2 sec between AGS beam spills.

Abstract A missing mass spectrometer search was made for several two-body, double charge exchange reactions, including backward K −p and pp elastic scattering at 8 and 16 GeV/ c and small momentum transfer. No examples of any of these processes were observed.

Abstract The Multiparticle Argo Spectrometer System, MASS, consists of a magnetic vertex spectrometer, two external trigger spectrometers, an on-line monitoring system and an off-line data analysis chain. The performance of MASS has been evaluated from physics data taken in a study of 28.5 GeV/ c pp collisions covering a large range of transverse momentum.

Abstract An on-line satellite/central computer facility has been developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory as part of the Multiparticle Argo Spectrometer System (MASS). This facility, consisting of a PDP-9 and a CDC-6600, has been successfully used in a study of proton-proton interactions at 28.5 GeV/ c .

We have measured the mean charged multiplicity nCH as a function of transverse momentum p⊥ of the forward proton in the reaction p + p ⇒ p + MM for five intervals of missing mass MM using our Multiparticle Argo Spectrometer System. We observe an increase of nCH for p⊥ > 1 GeV/c.
