The production performance and economic viability of a feedlot of 24 cattle, with an average age of 23 months, 12 Nellore (NEL) and 12 F1 Nellore x Brahman (NBR), divided into three diets: SIL - corn silage and concentrate diet; PEL - exclusive of pellets; GRN - corn and whole grain pellets were studied. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized scheme in a 2x3 factorial with four replications. The NBR animals showed similar results to the NEL in performance and economic viability for all variables analyzed. Among the diets, the PEL diet, although not the highest diet cost in R

/kg, had the lowest performance with higher TOC/kg, lower TR and lower net margins. The SIL diet had the lowest TOC/kg and cost/kg of carcass, with higher revenues and net margins. The economic results obtained for the GRN diet were similar to SIL, but had lower ADG compared to SIL and highest diet cost (R

/kg) among all. The diets were economically viable at the end of the trial, with average net margin/kg carcass of 2.12, 0.35 and 1.09 for SIL, FEP and GRN, respectively; however the SIL diet presented better productive and economical performance.

We studied the effect of increasing 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0% urea in natural sugar cane on cow milk production and composition, food productivity and economic viability. Eighteen lactating cows were studied, they had avarage milk production of 21.3±0.8kg/day and were 83±7 days in lactation in a switch-back, 3 x 3 design. The experimental diets consisted of a unique concentrated sugar cane portion with the 50:50 relation (MS base). The results showed no effect of different urea concentrations on the milk production or composition. However, food productivity (milk production/dry matter consumption) was 1.14; 1.17, and 1.17 respectively on urea diets of 0.0; 0.5 and 1.0% (P<0.05). Considering only the alimentary cost, all diets had a positive balance, and the 1.0% urea concentration was the best.

The objective of this experimental study was to evaluate the effects of different dietary energy sources on the carcass and meat traits of feedlot Nellore bulls. A total of 48 Nellore bulls at 32 months of age with 354.35±19.56 kg body weight were studied for 85 days. The bulls were allotted to four groups of 12 individuals: Whole corn grain - diet based on whole corn grain; Ground corn - diet based on ground corn grain; Citrus pulp - diet based on citrus pulp; and Steam-flaked corn - diet based on steam-flaked corn. Diets did not influence carcass quality or meat quality. Average values for fat depth, rib eye area, shear force, total cooking losses, and carcass yield were 4.97 mm, 74.71 cm2, 5.85 kgf, 26.82%, and 52.0%, respectively. Based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of this study, there is no restriction for the adoption of any of the tested diets in feedlots with Nellore bulls and the evaluated energy sources may be used to replace ground corn grain.

The effect of compensatory growth on performance and economical efficiency of steers on different dietary supplementation strategies in the rearing and fattening stages was evaluated. Fifty-four calves with average initial weight of 169.6±16.7kg were divided into eight treatments, each of them being a strategy of food supplementation. During the dry season the animals received protein - energy - mineral supplement (SP) with an average daily intake of 0.1 or 0.2 % of body weight (BW). During the rainy season the animals received SP with an average daily intake of 0.5 % of body weight or mineral supplementation (SM). In the fattening period, the animals received SP with an average daily intake of 1.4 % of body weight or were placed in feedlot. Animals that received SM had no compensatory gain. Animals that received SP during the rainy season (0,51±0,07kg/day) had compensatory growth when compared to the previous period, and obtained additional daily gain of 123g when compared to SM group (0,39±0,07kg/day), however did not obtain compensatory gain during the fattening phase. The effect of compensatory gain becomes minimal or zero in feedlot finished. Supplementation strategies with protein, energy and mineral intake in the first dried and the first water in steers life can be compensated with the use of these animals in the feedlot finishing phase with positive economic results.

A total of 98 heifers of three genetic groups: 34 Guzera (G), 32, 1/2 Guzera x 1/2 Nelore (GN) and 32 1/2 Red Angus x 1/2 Nelore (AN), 14 month old and average body weight of 249,65kg, raised in Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu were used to evaluate reconception rates. In the second breeding season (BS), only those 36 pregnant in the first BS (three G, nine GN and 24 AN), age 26 months and body weight of 313.67±25.01kg, 336.50±45.84kg and 399.86±44.45kg, respectively, G , GN and AN were evaluated. The highest reconception rate (58.33%, P<0.05) was registered for the AN group and showed that average daily gain of 0.30±0.06kg, showing that crosses between Bos taurus taurus x Bos taurus indicus leads to higher reproductive and productive performances.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of replacing crude protein of soybean meal by slow-release urea on the performance, carcass traits, and feeding costs of feedlot Nelore steers. Forty-eight Nelore steers were used, with an average age of 22 months and weight of 367.95±18.52 kg. A completely randomized design was used with four treatments: SM, 8.91% soybean meal and 0% slow-release urea (SRU); OP33, 6.01% soybean meal and 0.46% SRU; OP67, 2.94% soybean meal and 0.94% SRU; and OP100, 0% soybean meal and 1.41% SRU. No difference was observed between treatments for the variables initial weight, final weight, average daily gain, carcass gain, dry matter intake, feed conversion, biological efficiency, hot carcass weight, carcass yield, and feed cost of produced arroba. Slow-release urea, used to partially or totally replace protein of soybean meal in the diet, does not modify the performance, carcass traits, and economic efficiency of feedlot cattle.

The productive and economic performance of different beef genetic groups in a pasture-based growing system and feedlot finishing with one year cycle was evaluated. Thirty-six bulls from three groups F1Guzerat x Nellore F1 (GN); F1 Guzera x Hosltein (GH) and F1 1/2 Simmental + 1/4 Guzera + 1/4 Nellore (SG), with average age of 270 (± 30) days and average body weight of 241.3 (± 34.0) kg were utilized. The experimental design utilized was completely randomized (3 x 12). During the growing phase, bulls were kept in rotational Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu pastures, receiving commercial supplement; in the finishing phase, they received a diet containing sorghum silage and concentrate (50:50) for 61 days. The performance indices evaluated were average daily weight gain (ADG), average daily gain during the period (ADP), final body weight. Economic performance indicators were total revenue, total operating expenses per bushel (COT / @), gross margin and net margin. Average daily gain during the growing phase was similar (P> 0.05) among groups with an average of 746 and 456 grams, respectively, for the periods transitional rainy / dry season. The TOE/bushel recreates the grouping of SD (R
