Commercial copolymers based on styrene and divinylbenzene containing sulfonic acid groups were used as support for the incorporation of silver nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were obtained in situ by the reduction of Ag+ by using hydroxylamine in the presence of a protective agent. These materials were characterized with determination of the silver content and their morphological characteristics. The antibacterial activity of the final products against Escherichia coli was evaluated and the results show that the synthesized copolymers had antibacterial effect varying from 54 to 100%. The most efficient composite was made with small, well distributed particles.

Ultrafiltration was used to process banana juice (Musa sapientum, shum.) to promote its clarification and polyphenoloxidase remotion. The module consisted in a flat plate unit, with transversal flow and 14,6cm2 membrane area. Due enzyme molecular weight two poly(ether-sulfone) membranes were employed, with different molecular weight cut off of 10 and 30kDa. Clarified juice showed yellow color, high translucity and attractive aspect. The 30kDa cut off membrane showed a higher permeated flux than 10kDa membrane. Polyphenoloxidase activity was reduced in 97,5 and 96,2% for 10 and 30kDa membranes, respectively. A cloro-alkaline cleaning promoted permeated flux recuperation and membrane reuse.

We report the development of copolymers based on 2-vinylpyridine with different porosity degrees. The copolymers were quaternized with methyl iodide and acrylonitrile to introduce quaternary ammonium groups on pyridine units. To prepare charge transfer complexes, the unmodified copolymers and their derivatives quaternized were impregnated with iodine. The antibacterial properties of all the polymers were evaluated ranging from of the Escherichia coli strain. The unmodified copolymers did not have antibacterial activity against E.Coli suspensions. The quaternization with methyl iodine and acrylonitrile increased the biocidal performance of these copolymers, but only the copolymer with the lowest porosity modified with methyl iodine showed significant bactericidal action for all E. Coli concentrations. The 2-vinylpiridine copolymers quaternized and impregnated with iodine had higher antibacterial activity than the impregnated ones. The charge transfer complexes derived from the copolymer with the lowest porosity and highest swelling capacity in water had the best bactericidal performance.

We report the development of two copolymers based on 2-vinylpyridine, styrene and divinylbenzene (2Vpy-Sty-DVB) with different porosity degrees. The copolymers were subsequently quaternized with methyl iodide. To prepare charge transfer complexes, the unmodified copolymers and their derivatives quaternized with methyl iodine were impregnated with iodine. The antibacterial properties of the polymers were evaluated in dilutions ranging from 102 to 107 cells/mL of the auxotrophic OHd5-K12 Escherichia coli strain. It was possible to obtain materials with complete antibacterial activity even in the highest cell concentrations tested.

ABSTRACT This study aims to evaluate the effects of oilfield water (OW), treated by a hybrid process of electrocoagulation and reverse osmosis (EC–RO), on seed germination and early growth characteristics of sunflower (Heliantus annus L.). In the EC step, tests were conducted with 28.6 A m−2 current density and 4 min. reaction time. In the RO step, the system was operated with 1 L min−1 constant flow and 2 MPa, 2.5 MPa and 3 MPa feed pressures. In all feed pressures, RO polymeric membranes achieved very high removals of chemical oxygen demand (up to 89%) and oils and greases (100%) from EC-treated effluent. In best feed pressure (2.5 MPa), turbidity, total dissolved salts, electrical conductivity, salinity, toxic ions and sodium adsorption ratio values attained internationally recognized standards for irrigation water. Using EC–RO (feed pressure:2.5 MPa) treated OW, germinated sunflower seeds percentage (86 ± 6%), speed of germination (30 ± 2) and biomass production (49 ± 5 mg) were statistically similar to control (distilled water) results. Vigor index average values obtained using OW treated by EC–RO (3871)were higher than that obtained by OW water treated by EC (3300). The results of this study indicate that EC–RO seems to be a promising alternative for treatment of OW aiming sunflower crops irrigation, since the use of this treated effluent did not affect adversely seed germination and seedling development, and improved seedling vigor. Furthermore, OW treatment by EC–RO reduces sodium levels into acceptable standards values avoiding soil degradation.

Estudo da emissão por fluorescência de ultravioleta na quantificação de um inibidor de corrosão do tipo sal de amônio quaternário em água

Herllaine de Almeida Rangel; Fábio Merçon

Quaternary ammonium salts are the corrosion inhibitors most frequently used by the oil industry. In this study, the ultraviolet fluorescence technique was evaluated for the analysis of a quaternary ammonium salt in water as a corrosion inhibitor. The comparison with standard salt showed that an alkyl aryl quaternary ammonium salt is the main fluorophore, with emission maxima at 306 and 593 nm. The best instrumental parameters were: width of excitation and emission slits of 10 and 15 nm, respectively, and scan rate of 10 nm min-1. The presence of aromatic compounds and biocides affects the analysis of corrosion inhibitors.

The main purpose of this work was to evaluate the performance of a commercial reverse osmosis (RO) membrane regarding selectivity (rejection) and productivity (permeate flux) of the treatment of quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) after electro-Fenton (EF) treatment. Pollutants treated after the EF process should be investigated for ecotoxicity, since excess ions and high conductivity are harmful to aquatic and terrestrial biota. The use of the membrane system after EF treatment acts as final polishing since some electro-oxidative treatments leave the sample with high conductivity. In this study, RO was operated with a constant flow of 1 L min-1 and feed pressures of 1 MPa, 2 MPa and 3 MPa to reject ions (sodium and iron) and to decrease the level of toxicity using representative species from different taxonomic groups: freshwater algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata), microcrustaceans (Daphnia similis) and lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa). Experiments carried out at different pressures showed that increased pressure caused a rise in rejection and permeate flux. At the applied pressure of 3 MPa, after 180 min, conductivity removal efficiency of 83% was obtained, 85% for sodium and 99% for iron at a flow of 13.87 L/h m2. In all bioassays, the use of the membrane was efficient to decrease the toxicity by rejecting the ions. The microcrustacean tested was the most sensitive organism, while alga was the most tolerant organism. The germination of lettuce seeds and the relative growth rate of the radicle after the combined EF+RO process was satisfactory.
