Abstract:We provide an analytic solution for the mean-field equations and for the relevant physical quantities at the Gaussian level, in terms of the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds, for the crossover problem from BCS superconductivity to Bose-Einstein condensation of a three-dimensional system of free fermions interacting via an attractive contact potential at zero temperature. This analytic solution enables us to follow the evolution between the two limits in a particularly simple and transparent way, as well as to verify the absence of singularities during the evolution.

We investigate the adiabatic evolution of a set of nondegenerate eigenstates of a parametrized Hamiltonian. Their relative phase change can be related to geometric measurable quantities that extend the familiar concept of Berry phase to the evolution of more than one state. We present several physical systems where these concepts can be applied, including an experiment on microwave cavities for which off-diagonal phases can be determined from published data.

We consider the charge shuttle proposed by Gorelik et al. driven by a time-dependent voltage bias. In the case of asymmetric setup, the system behaves as a rectifier. For pure ac drive, the rectified current shows a rather rich frequency dependent response characterized by frequency locking at fractional values of the external frequency. Because of the nonlinear dynamics of the shuttle, rectification is present also for very low frequencies. These effects could be useful to unveil the internal dynamics of nanomechanical devices.

We consider a hybrid system consisting of two normal metal leads weakly connected to a superconductor. Current-current correlations of the normal leads are studied in the tunneling limit at subgap voltages and temperatures. We find that only two processes contribute to the cross-correlation: the crossed Andreev reflection (emission of electrons in different leads) and the elastic cotunneling. Both processes are possible due to the finite size of the Cooper pair. Noise measurements can thus be used to probe directly the superconducting wave function without the drawbacks appearing in average current measurements where the current is dominated by direct Andreev reflection processes. By tuning the voltages it is possible to change the sign of the cross-correlation. Quantitative predictions are presented both in the diffusive and ballistic regimes.

We study the charge transfer in a small grain oscillating between two leads. Coulomb blockade restricts the charge fluctuations in such a way that only zero or one additional electrons can sit on the grain. The system thus acts as a charge shuttle. We obtain the full counting statistics of charge transfer and discuss its behavior. For large oscillation amplitude the probability of transferring
