ABSTRACT Waste heat recovery from shipboard machineries could be a potential source for heat treatment of ballast water. Similar to a shipboard schematic arrangement, a laboratory-scale engine-heat exchanger set-up harvesting waste heat from jacket water and exhaust gases was erected to test the level of species’ mortalities. Mortalities were also assessed under experimental conditions for cultured and natural plankton communities at laboratory level. Effect of pump impellers on species’ mortalities were also tested. Exposures between 60°C and 70°C for 60 sec resulted in 80–100% mortalities. Mortalities due to pump impeller effects were observed in the range of 70–100% for zooplankton. On the laboratory-scale arrangement, >95% mortalities of phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacteria were recorded. It was demonstrated that the temperature of tropical sea waters used as secondary coolant can be raised to cause species’ mortalities, employing engine exhaust gases. The results also indicated that pump impeller effects will enhance species’ mortalities. The limitations of the shipboard application of this method would be the large ballast volumes, flow rates and time for treatment. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

Abstract Numerical solution of strip theory equations is used for the calculation of hydrodynamic forces and waveinduced ship motions taking into account lateral drift. Calculated motions for various drift angles are compared with experiments for the container ship S-175. The results show that the presented method captures the effect of drift on the wave-induced ship motions, and that this effect is not negligible.

This paper presented a new design for the unmanned surface vessel (USV) platform with a self-manoeuvring system which is capable of collecting the same data as a hydrography boat. This platform was designed with three hulls that were placed in triangle position. The hulls designed were in the form of rudders-shape and were vertically placed as a slender body shape using NACA 64-0012 profile. This provides the USV with low-drag characteristic. The application of stability and resistance theories investigated the effect of the configuration position of the three hulls for this platform. The results revealed that a larger configuration distance between the three hulls will lead to a reduction in resistance and the platform will be in highly stable condition. The relationships derived from these findings should produce a stable and low-drag platform to accomplish the design concept of three rudders-shaped like body in columns for low-drag USV. This concept may help us to accomplish the design requirements that are related to low-drag and minimum power operation.
