Abstract The chemical composition of the essential oil from the leaves of carrot (Daucus carota L. subsp. sativus (Hoffman.) Arcang. (Apiaceae) from Iran was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The oil yield obtained by hydrodistillation was 0.2 % (v/w). Ninety-one compounds, accounting for 97.1 % of the oil, were identified. The main class of the compounds was found to be monoterpenes (30.0 %), sesquiterpenes (27.8 %) and phenyl propanes (26.4 %). The major constituents were trans-anethole (23.5 %) and myrcene (14.5 %).

Abstract The essential oil of Stachys lavandulifolia Vahl (Lamiaceae) was isolated by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of the plant and the oil was obtained with 0.25% yield, which was analyzed by capillary GC and GC/ MS. Studies of essential oil revealed germacrene-D (13.2%), β-phellandrene (12.7%) β-pinene (10.2%), myrcene (9.4%), α-pinene (8.4%) and (Z)-β-ocimene (5.8%), as the major constitutents.

Aqueous, methanolic and chloroformic extracts of Pulicaria dysenterica aerial parts were tested for their antibacterial activity using the disc-diffusion assay technique. The methanolic extract was found to be the most effective extract against three out of six tested bacteria. All of the extracts were active against Vibrio cholera.

Abstract The essential oil of the aerial parts of Calamintha officinalis was investigated by GC and GC-MS. The oil yield of the dried plant obtained by hydrodistillation was 1.2% (v/w). Twenty-one compounds constituting 99.3% of the C. officinalis oil was identified. The oxygenated monoterpenes (ketone compounds, 69.6%) were the major group of constituents in the oil and carvone (46.7%) and pulegone (22.1%) were the main substances of this fraction. The hydrocarbon monoterpenes represented 26.1% of the oil constituents and limonene (24.6%) was the main compound in this part.

Abstract Present paper reports the chemical composition of essential oils of roots and leaves from Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (Family Apiaceae). The oils were isolated using hydro-distilla-tion method and characterized by GC and GC-MS. 32 constituents amounting 95.7 % of the roots oil and 29 constituents constituting 92.1% of the leaves oil were identified. Myristicin, dillapiole and apiole were the major components in the root oil, while trans-anethole was the major constituent in the leaves oil.

Abstract The chemical composition of the hydrodistilled essential oil from the air-dried aerial parts of Lamium amplexicaule L. (Labiatae) was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The oil yield was 0.1%. Forty-nine constituents representing 97.6% of the oil have been identified. The hydrocarbon sesquiterpenes (40.7%) and oxygenated monoterpenoids (22.9%) were the major class of the constituents. Germacrene-D (22.3%) and camphor (18.1%) were the main components in the essential oil.

Abstract The chemical composition of the essential oil from the fresh husk of Pistacia vera L. (Anacardiaceae) fruit from Iran was analyzed by GC/FID and GC/MS. The oil yield obtained by hydrodistillation was 0.25% ± 0.05 (v/w). Twenty-six compounds, accounting for 98.1% of the oil, were identified. The main class of the compounds was found to be hydrocarbon monoterpenes (96.0%). The major constituents were limonene (35.1%), α-pinene (28.7%) and α-terpinolene (21.1%).
