Efficient intelligent energy routing protocol in wireless sensor networks

Farzad Kiani; Ehsan Amiri; Mazdak Zamani; Touraj Khodadadi; Azizah Abdul Manaf

In wireless sensor networks energy is a very important issue because these networks consist of lowpower sensor nodes. This paper proposes a new protocol to reach energy efficiency. The protocol has a different priority in energy efficiency as reducing energy consumption in nodes, prolonging lifetime of the whole network, increasing system reliability, increasing the load balance of the network, and reducing packet delays in the network. In the new protocol is proposed an intelligent routing protocol algorithm. It is based on reinforcement learning techniques. In the first step of the protocol, a new clustering method is applied to the network and the network is established using a connected graph. Then data is transmitted using the Q-value parameter of reinforcement learning technique. The simulation results show that our protocol has improvement in different parameters such as network lifetime, packet delivery, packet delay, and network balance.

A Survey on Management Frameworks and Open Challenges in IoT

Farzad Kiani

The new era of technology is a rollback in which massive information comes from interconnected devices. These types of things that have Internet connectivity are called the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT and its applications have enabled novel service provisioning, whereas at the same time it has raised complex challenges of managing such network. Resource limitation such as computational power and energy limitation defines the characteristics of IoT that require a novel design of management framework. Designing a management framework that meets the IoT requirements is a daunting task. Recently, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm has eased the management of traditional Internet by provisioning centralized view of the network. This makes SDN a potential candidate for managing IoT. However, traditional design of the SDN paradigm needs to be redefined to adapt it for the IoT. Hence, in this paper, we have discussed trends and research of management architecture for IoT based on Software-Defined Networking principles. In addition, we discuss non-SDN-based approaches. In this paper, we compare all of the efforts in the last five years in addressing issues of IoT management that involves security service provisioning, fault tolerance, energy management, and load balancing. We also discuss future research directions that evolved from our detailed survey and taxonomy of the Software-Defined IoT (SDIoT) management frameworks.

Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks by Distributed Time Sychnronization Algorithm

Farzad Kiani; Muhammad Fahim

In this paper, for decrease transmissions delay in wireless sensor and actor network is suggested a distributed algorithm. Energy consumption is very important issue because they have limited energy. Current protocols due to have transmission delay in sending data among nodes cause increase consuming energy in network. Proposed algorithm is based on distributed algorithm and can solve this problem somewhat. In this algorithm, a distinguished node sends time values along a spanning tree structure periodically. One of the most important advantages of the algorithm is purely distributed and local. It does not depend on a fixed structure for disseminating time values. In conclusion, results gained shows that suggested protocol decrease transmissions delay of wireless network above 30 percent compared to the existing approaches.

Animal behavior management by energy-efficient wireless sensor networks

Farzad Kiani

Abstract In recent years, studies have been conducted on systems based on wireless sensor networks for the detection of animal behaviors. These systems can offer significant information on how to increase the production and animals’ health. They consist of low-cost sensor nodes with limited resources. One of the critical resources is the power unit. These systems have an energy problem especially in outdoor environments same as other wireless sensor-based systems. ZigBee-based RF modules are used for data transmissions in these systems. Hence, they have limited battery and memory. To fulfill the requirements of power reduction, this paper proposes a technique based on time-driven systems for controlling the transmission rate of ZigBee-based RF modules based on data aggregation and sleep/wake-up methods. Data aggregation is done in many cases. However, the sleep/wake-up method is related to animal behavior because it may cause changes in the network topology. The proposed system is implemented on cows and the results show that the proposed system can help to achieve a significant reduction in power consumption of wireless sensor networks and improve the lifetime. In additional, it can offer and help to liable of animals in monitoring the health of their animals.

mHealth: Blood donation application using android smartphone

Muhammad Fahim; Halil Ibrahim Cebe; Jawad Rasheed; Farzad Kiani

mHealth is new horizons for health that offers healthcare services by utilizing the mobile devices and communication technologies. In health care services, blood donation is a complex process and consumes time to find some donor who has the compatibility of blood group with the patient. We developed android based blood donation application as mHealth solutions to establish a connection between the requester and donor at anytime and anywhere. The objective of this application is to provide the information about the requested blood and number of available donors around those localities. It assists the requester to broadcast the message across the maintained volunteer blood donor network by our application and update the requester at the same time who is willing to donate the requested blood. To evaluate our application, we created requester-donor profiles and analysed that it will help to improve the timely access of the information and rapid response in emergency situation.

Dynamic Routing Protocol for Virtual Cellular Networks

Farzad Kiani; Sayyad Alizadeh

In this paper, a novel dynamic routing protocol is proposed so it is suitable for port addition, removal and link/port failures. The proposed protocol is favorable for virtual cellular networks and it does not suffer in the transmit power when it needs to rerouting phase. The transmit power of the proposed rerouting is compared with that of the complete power minimized one. The simulation results shows the transmit power and time and number of messages for route reconstruction in the paper protocol is efficient.

An Intelligent Algorithm for Highly Heterogeneous Arithmetic Grid Systems

Muhammad Fahim; Farzad Kiani; Sayyad Alizadeh

Arithmetic grids are a new instance in distributed and parallel computing systems. They can realize a virtual supercomputer over idle resources available in a wide area network like the Internet. The grids are characterized for exploiting highly heterogeneous resources. They focus on arithmetic grids to reach high performance by using effective map tasks onto heterogeneous resources. Generally, the mapping tasks are realized by online and batch methods. In the batch mode at any mapping event a batch of tasks are mapped, whereas in online mode only one task is mapped. In this paper, four on-line mode mapping algorithms based on learning automata are introduced. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, computer simulation has been conducted. The results of experiments show that the proposed algorithms outperform two best existing mapping algorithms when machine heterogeneity high.
