This paper proposes fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making approach integrated with fuzzy real option value theory. The applicability of the proposed method was shown on a real-world supermarket location selection problem. Based on the interviews with the experts, the evaluation criteria for retail location selection were identified. Then the network for fuzzy analytic network process (ANP) method was constructed. The fuzzy real option value for each alternative was calculated and used in the proposed approach as the representative of the financial dimension. Finally, the preference ranking of alternatives and the relative importance of the criteria were obtained. The significant contribution of the proposed approach is that it integrates the financial dimension (FROV) of the location problem methodologically with the multi-criteria characteristic (FANP) of the problem. Another importance of this study is the first usage of real options valuation in the area of location selection science.

Performance evaluation is one of the most important problems for retail chains and may have effect on tactical and strategic decisions. This paper proposes a grey-based multi-criteria performance evaluation model for retail sector. This model integrates Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and modified Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) methods. First, the grey-based DEMATEL method is used for determining the importance of performance indicators to be used in GRA based on the experts’ assessments. Then, the proposed modified GRA method is used for the performance evaluation and ranking of retail stores with respect to the predetermined performance indicators. Finally, the effectiveness and the applicability of the developed approach are illustrated with a case study with the actual data taken from a retail chain in Turkey.

One of the most important points in strategic planning process is the selection of strategies. This due to the reason that strategies are usually related to each other which increases the complexity. In this study, we present an approach named as grey-based DEMATEL method for analyzing and evaluating the strategies for universities. The use of grey systems theory together with DEMATEL method is an effective and successfull approach since it can integrate uncertainty and ambiguity into the evaluation process based on subjective judgements. The aim of this method is analyzing and revealing the causal relationships among strategies, and also prioritizing these strategies according to their level of influence.

Assembly line balancing is one of the most important topics in production literature due to the obvious advantages it provides. Although there are many developed mathematical models and heuristics to solve this problem, simulation is still one of the most popular and widely used techniques used in both assembly line balancing and manufacturing system design. In this study, 22-inch LCD TV assembly line that consists of 47 tasks is handled, and the line balancing is performed by using two different approaches. The results of each approach are compared by using simulation on an experimental basis.

Location selection decisions are irreversible for any type of enterprise. Making the right choice is vital. In this work, at the beginning, criteria for location selection in retail sector are determined. Then because of the dependency among criteria we choose ANP method as multi-criteria decision aid. The data are ambiguous and the nature of the problem is dynamic, hence fuzzy ANP is preferred. As the measurement technique of the financial criterion, we used the fuzzy real option value that calculates the risky side of the problem. Fuzzy trinomial lattice method without any future competitor is offered as the solution procedure for fuzzy real option value through its impact on efficiency and accuracy.

This chapter aims to predict the health care expenditure (HCE) per capita which is an important indicator of a country’s health status and economic growth. Accurate estimation of HCE can guide efficient health care policy making and resource allocation. Grey forecasting models are applied for predicting the HCE per capita of Turkey. Three different strategies are proposed which are rolling mechanism, training data size optimization and parameter optimization to improve the forecasting accuracy of these models. Genetic algorithm (GA) which is one of the most widely used meta-heuristic optimization techniques is applied for training data size and parameter optimization of the grey forecasting models. The application results indicate that the optimization of parameters and training data size together with rolling mechanism highly improve the forecasting performance of the grey models.

One of the important points in decision-making is representing the uncertainty. There have been developed approaches which are based on either fuzzy sets theory or probability theory to model the inherent uncertainty and imprecision in the pairwise comparison process of analytic hierarchy process (AHP). This study proposes a hybrid approach that integrates fuzzy sets theory and simulation technique into AHP method to better represent the uncertainty in decision-making process. The aim of the proposed approach is to benefit the advantages of both probability theory and fuzzy sets theory which may provide a new paradigm for modeling uncertainty in multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). An illustrative example is also presented to show the applicability of the proposed approach.
