Nanoscale heat flux between nanoporous materials.

Svend-Age Biehs; Philippe Ben-Abdallah; Felipe S. S. Rosa; Karl Joulain; Jean-Jacques Greffet

By combining stochastic electrodynamics and the Maxwell-Garnett description for effective media we study the radiative heat transfer between two nanoporous materials. We show that the heat flux can be significantly enhanced by air inclusions, which we explain by: (a) the presence of additional surface waves that give rise to supplementary channels for heat transfer throughout the gap, (b) an increase in the contribution given by the ordinary surface waves at resonance, (c) and the appearance of frustrated modes over a broad spectral range. We generalize the known expression for the nanoscale heat flux for anisotropic metamaterials.

Modulation of near-field heat transfer between two gratings

Svend-Age Biehs; Felipe S. S. Rosa; Philippe Ben-Abdallah

We present a theoretical study of near-field heat transfer between two uniaxial anisotropic planar structures. We investigate how the distance and relative orientation (with respect to their optical axes) between the objects affect the heat flux. In particular, we show that by changing the angle between the optical axes it is possible in certain cases to modulate the net heat flux up to 90% at room temperature, and discuss possible applications of such a strong effect.

Radiative heat transfer between two dielectric nanogratings in the scattering approach

We present a theoretical study of radiative heat transfer between dielectric nanogratings in the scattering approach. As a comparision with these exact results, we also evaluate the domain of validity of Derjaguins Proximity Approximation (PA). We consider a system of two corrugated silica plates with various grating geometries, separation distances, and lateral displacement of the plates with respect to one another. Numerical computations show that while the PA is a good approximation for aligned gratings, it cannot be used when the gratings are laterally displaced. We illustrate this by a thermal modulator device for nanosystems based on such a displacement.

Radiative cooling of nanoparticles close to a surface

Maria Tschikin; Svend-Age Biehs; Felipe S. S. Rosa; Philippe Ben-Abdallah

We study the radiative cooling of polar and metallic nanoparticles immersed in a thermal bath close to a partially reflecting surface. The dynamics of relaxation is investigated at different distances from the surface, i.e., in the near-field and far-field zones. We demonstrate the existence of an oscillating behavior for the thermal relaxation time with respect to the separation distance from the surface, an analog of Friedel oscillations in Fermi liquids.

Enhanced radiative heat transfer between nanostructured gold plates

Romain Guérout; J. Lussange; Felipe S. S. Rosa; Jean-Paul Hugonin; Diego A. R. Dalvit; Jean-Jacques Greffet; A. Lambrecht; Serge Reynaud

We compute the radiative heat transfer between nanostructured gold plates in the framework of the scattering theory. We predict an enhancement of the heat transfer as we increase the depth of the corrugations while keeping the distance of closest approach fixed. We interpret this effect in terms of the evolution of plasmonic and guided modes as a function of the gratings geometry.
