Synthesis and x-ray crystal structure of an asymmetric mixed metal [{(ν5-C5H4SiMe3)TiF2}5AlF3(THF)] complex containing an AlTi5F13 core

Dietmar Stalke; Feng-Quan Liu; Herbert W. Roesky

Abstract The asymmetric mixed metal complex [{( ν 5 -C 5 H 4 SiMe 3 )TiF 2 } 5 AlF 3 (THF)] was obtained by treating [( ν 5 -C 5 H 4 SiMe 3 )TiF 3 ] with aluminium metal in THF, resulting in an octahedral AlTi 5 mixed metal core arranged around an interstitial fluorine, proved by X-ray structure analysis.

Abstract The organo titanium(IV)trifluoride [C 5 H 4 (SiMe 3 )]TiF 3 , 2 , has been reduced with zinc and manganese, respectively. As an intermediate product from these reactions the tetra-nuclear Ti III cluster {[C 5 H 4 (SiMe 3 )] 2 TiF 2 } 3 Ti, 3 , has been obtained. By oxidative fluorination using AgF complex 3 was converted to the titanium(IV) complex [C 5 H 4 (SiMe 3 )] 2 TiF 2 . Reduction of (C 5 H 5 ) 2 TiF 2 with gallium led to the formation of [(C 5 H 5 ) 2 TiF 2 ] 3 Ga, 7 .

Synthesis and characterisation of quinonide bridged dinuclear complexes of titanium and zirconium

Cyclopentadienyl-zirconium(IV) and -titanium(IV) halides and alkyls react with hydroquinones to give bridged dinuclear complexes. Such compounds are also formed upon treatment of titanium(III) precursors with benzoquinone. Various cyclopentadienyl derivatives were used [cyclopentadienyl (C5H5), pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (C5Me5), ethyltetramethylcyclopentadienyl (C5Me4Et) and trimethylsilylcyclopentadienyl (C5H4SiMe3)]. Several synthetic routes are described leading to the products [{Zr(C5H5)2Cl}2(µ-OC6H4O)]1a, [{Zr(C5H5)2Cl}2{µ-O(C6H3But-2)O}]1b, [{Zr(C5H5)2Cl}2{µ-O(C6H2But2-2,5)O}]1c, [{Zr(C5Me4Et)2Cl}2(µ-OC6H4O)]1d, [{Ti(C5Me4Et)Cl2}2(µ-OC6H4O)]2, [{Ti(C5Me5)2Cl}2(µ-OC6H4O)]3, [{Ti(C5Me5)F2}2{µ-O(C6H2But2-2,5)O}]4, [{Zr(C5Me4Et)2F}2(µ-OC6H4O)]5, [{Ti(C5Me5)2F}2(µ-OC6H4O)]6a, [{Ti(C5H4SiMe3)2F}2(µ-OC6H4O)]6b, [{Ti(C5Me5)Me2}2{µ-O(C6H2But2-2,5)O}]7 and [{Ti(C5Me5)Cl2}2O]8. Furthermore it is shown that the formation of the monobridged products is independent of the steric requirements of the substituents of the quinonide ring. The structures of [{Zr(C5Me4Et)2Cl}2(µ-OC6H4O)]1d and [{Ti(C5Me5)2Cl}2(µ-OC6H4O)]3 were solved by X-ray diffraction analysis.

The preparation by different methods of the eight-membered ring compounds (R1XTiOSiR22O)2 is reported: (2: R1=C5Η5, X=Cl, R2=tBu; 3: R1=N(SiMe3)2, X=C1, R2=tBu; 4: R1=C5Me5, X=Cl, R2=Ph; 6: R1=X=NEt2, R2=tBu). The six-membered ring Ph2SiO[OTiC5Me5(Cl)]2 5 is formed together with 4 by the reaction of C5Me5TiCl3 and Ph2Si(OLi)2. Compounds 2 and 4 have been characterized by X-ray structural analysis.

Synthesis and structures of cyclopentadienyl fluoro and chloro complexes of a triad (Ti, Zr, Hf) containing acyclic and cyclic siloxane building blocks

Feng-Quan Liu; Isabel Usón; Herbert W. Roesky

Cyclic and acyclic monocyclopentadienyl fluoro and chloro titanium siloxanes have been synthesised. The fluoro complexes are cyclic, whereas acyclic chloro derivatives are accessible when using bulky cyclopentadienyl ligands. Acyclic bis(cyclopentadienyl) fluoro and chloro siloxanes of titanium, zirconium and hafnium have also been prepared. The crystal structures of two cyclic titanium derivatives [{(C5Me4Et)FTiOSiBut2O}2][triclinic, space group P, a= 9.644(3), b= 11.397(3), c= 11.822(3)A, α= 116.702(10), β= 104.507(12), γ= 98.906(8)°, Z= 1] and [{(C5H4Me)FTiOSiBut2O}2][monoclinic, space group C2/c, a= 29.75(2), b= 13.152(8), c= 22.332(11)A, β= 124.88(3)°, Z= 8] have been determined.
