This study evaluated the representations associated with tobacco as a mediator between couples ad- justment and partner support in smokers and abstinents, as well as the role of the partners support as a mediator in the relationship between the representations associated with tobacco and sociocognitive variables to quit smoking. 224 smokers and 169 abstinent participated in the study. Smokers smoked at least for 3 years and abstinents were smoke free for more than 3 months. Results revealed that partner support had a mediator effect on the relationship between the representations associated with tobacco and sociocognitive variables (attitudes, perceived behavioral control and planning of coping/action). The emotional representations of tobacco were not a mediator role in the relationship between the couple adjustment and partner support on smokers and abstinents. Results indicated the importance of including partner support during smoking cessation interventions among smokers with intention to quit smoking. This study evaluated the representations associated with tobacco as a mediator between couple ́s adjustment and partner support in smokers and abstinents, as well as the role of the partner’s support as a mediator in the relationship between the representations associated with tobacco and sociocognitive variables to quit smoking. 224 smokers and 169 abstinent participated in the study. Resumo Este estudo avaliou sintomas de transtornos psicologicos, qualidade de vida, suporte do parceiro, coping familiar, ajustamento de casal e representacoes do tabaco em fumantes, ex-fumantes e nao fumantes. Participaram no estudo 224 fumantes, 169 ex-fumantes e 173 nao fumantes. This study evaluated psychological morbidity, quality of life, partner support, family coping, couple adjustment and tobacco representations in smokers, abstinents and non-smokers, as well as the predictors of partner support and quality of life in smokers and abstinents. Participated in the study 224 smokers, 169 abstinents and 173 non-smokers. The timeline of tobacco consumption in the smoking group was at least 3 years and in the abstinents for at leat 3 months. Results revealed that abstinents, when compared with non-smokers and smokers, showed more threatening cognitive representations in relation to tobacco, more anxiety, more family coping, more partner positive and negative support and mental quality of life. Non-smokers revealed more threatening emotional tobacco representations, less comprehensibility towards their smoking habit and more cohesion. Smokers, interestingly, showed more physical quality of life. This study emphasizes the importance of representations related with tobacco, psychological morbidity and partner support.

Objective: To analyze the moderating effect of partner support in the relationship between psychological morbidity and quality of life among smokers and abstainers. Methods: This observational cross-sectional study assessed “partner support”, “psychological morbidity” (depression, anxiety and stress) and “quality of life” in a convenience sample of 224 smokers and 169 abstainers through questionnaires that were validated and analyzed using regression and simple slopes. Results: Partner support (positive and negative) among smokers appeared as a moderator in the relationship between psychological morbidity and physical quality of life. As for mental quality of life, the partner support did not have a moderating effect. The results among abstainers are similar to those found among smokers. When positive partner support is strong, there is an opposite relationship between psychological morbidity and quality of life. However, this relationship is stronger when negative partner support is strong and, in this case, the relationship between psychological morbidity and quality of life is negative. Conclusion: Partner support, whether positive or negative, was an important moderator concerning quality of life and psychological morbidity of smokers and abstainers. doi:10.5020/18061230.2013.p349
