Facoemulsificação por córnea clara no meridiano mais curvo

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of phacoemulsification through clear cornea incision in the steepest meridian (ISM), on the magnitude of preoperative keratometric astigmatism. To map the magnitude of surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) by clear cornea incision in the positions: nasal (N), temporal (T), superior temporal (ST) and inferior temporal (IT). METHODS: A prospective keratometric study was performed in 48 eyes of 48 patients, submitted to phacoemulsification by incision in the steepest meridian. Keratometric measures were taken preoperatively and one month after surgery. Surgically induced astigmatism was determined by the rectangular coordinate by the modified ten-step method. RESULTS: There were 21 right eyes and 27 left eyes submitted to surgery, 16 eyes being N, 4 eyes T, 22 eyes TS, and 6 eyes TI. The average preoperative and postoperative cylindrical ametropias were, respectively, 1.06 ± 0.65 D and 0.89 ± 0.80 D. We found a statistical difference regarding decrease in the preoperative keratometric astigmatism (p=0.016). The total average of the surgically induced astigmatism was 0.94 ± 0.56 D. In relation to the groups, surgically induced astigmatism was 1.06 ± 0.66 D in N, 0.87 ± 0.20 D in T, 0.95 ± 0.55 D in TS and 0.61 ± 0.25 D in TI. There was no statistical difference in the surgically induced astigmatism between these groups (p=0.426). CONCLUSION: The technique was shown to be effective in decreasing the preoperative keratometric astigmatism. The surgically induced astigmatism was 1.06 ± 0.66 D in N, 0.95 ± 0.55 D in TS, 0.61 ± 0.25 D in T and 0.87 ± 0.20 D in TI.

Emprego das medidas anatômicas do buraco macular idiopático obtidas pela tomografia de coerência óptica como fator preditivo nos resultados visuais: um estudo piloto

PURPOSE: To evaluate the anatomy of idiopathic macular hole (IMH) using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and to construct a prognostic index that can be correlated with the visual outcomes and the anatomical closing. METHODS: Prospective study, in which 22 eyes with IMH had been evaluated through OCT in the daily postoperative period of IMH surgery. The Prognostic of Macular Hole Index (PMHI) was created which was correlated with the anatomical result and the postoperative visual acuity (VA) six months after surgery. RESULTS: Sixteen eyes (72.7%) got anatomical closing at the end of six months of follow-up. On analysis of PMHI, there was significant difference between group 1 (open MH) and group 2 (closed MH) (p=0.0018). The risk for failure of anatomical closing is 11 times greater when the diameter of the internal base is over 600 µm or IPBM is less than 0.6 (p=0.0495). Regarding final VA, it was observed that the IPBM had a significant negative correlation with AV (p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: IPBM showed to be the best predictor of anatomical closing and postoperative visual acuity among the studied variables. It predicted 41% of the postoperative final visual acuity, leading us to believe that other factors, such as the time of history and the degeneration of photoreceptors in these older BM, can be involved in the visual outcomes.

Ritmo de piscar em portadores de pterígio antes e após a exérese

PURPOSE To evaluate the eyeblink rate in patients with pterygium before and after the lesion exeresis. METHODS Forty-one patients with pterygium were evaluated before and 60 days after the lesion exeresis. They were digitally videotaped during one minute in a standard setting using a Sony Digital 8 DCR - TRV110 and the images were transferred to a personal computer (McIntosh 400) and processed with the iMovie software. The patients stayed in primary gaze position, under artificial illumination. Total blink, complete and incomplete blink and the opening and closure time were measured using frames scale. The data were submitted to statistical analysis. RESULTS Before surgery, 36.36% of the patients with pterygium complained of foreign body and after that, 61.02% had no symptoms. The incomplete blink increased after surgery. The opening and closure time was similar before and after surgery. CONCLUSION With pterygium exeresis the symptoms decreased and the incomplete blink increased a little. Nevertheless the blink rate barely changed. Estudo da morfologia macular após a remoção da membrana epirretiniana idiopática utilizando a tomografia de coerência óptica (OCT): um estudo piloto

PURPOSE To describe the relation between visual results and macular morphology through optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients submitted to removal of the idiopathic epiretinal membranes. METHODS Ten eyes of ten patients with diagnosis of idiopathic epiretinal membranes underwent standard 20-G pars plana vitrectomy. Posterior hyaloid attachments were identified and dealt with. Idiopathic epiretinal membranes were removed in all cases. Corrected visual acuity, retinography, fluorescein angiography, fundus biomicroscopy and the optical coherence tomography in the pre- and postoperative periods were performed in all patients. In OCT, three characteristics were considered in each image: presence of foveal depression, presence of cystoid macular edema and mean central macular thickness. RESULTS Pre-operative visual acuity varied from 20/80 to counting fingers. The mean age was 63 years, ranging from 57 to 78 years. Five patients were male and five female. Preoperative visual acuity (VA) varied from 20/80 to CD to 1 meter. An improvement in VA of at least two lines was noted in all cases and metamorphopsia in eight eyes (80%). Four patients did not present metamorphopsia according to Amsler grid test, and the remaining presented partial improvement. On optical coherence tomography all eyes maintained increased central thickness, ranging from 232 to 605 micro (mean of 351.9 micro). Three eyes maintained cystoid macular edema. Four eyes presented final VA better or equal to 20/30. In this group the mean central thickness was of 277 micro. Foveal contour was recovered in two of these eyes. Four patients had no residual cystoid macular edema. CONCLUSIONS Optical coherence tomography is a tool that evaluates the structural changes before and after surgery to remove idiopathic epiretinal membranes. Although the foveal area architecture stays irregular six months after surgery, the visual outcomes are very promising. Other prognostics factors may be involved in the final visual results of this pathology.

ATLANTIC MAMMAL TRAITS: a data set of morphological traits of mammals in the Atlantic Forest of South America

Measures of traits are the basis of functional biological diversity. Numerous works consider mean species-level measures of traits while ignoring individual variance within species. However, there is a large amount of variation within species and it is increasingly apparent that it is important to consider trait variation not only between species, but also within species. Mammals are an interesting group for investigating trait-based approaches because they play diverse and important ecological functions (e.g., pollination, seed dispersal, predation, grazing) that are correlated with functional traits. Here we compile a data set comprising morphological and life history information of 279 mammal species from 39,850 individuals of 388 populations ranging from -5.83 to -29.75 decimal degrees of latitude and -34.82 to -56.73 decimal degrees of longitude in the Atlantic forest of South America. We present trait information from 16,840 individuals of 181 species of non-volant mammals (Rodentia, Didelphimorphia, Carnivora, Primates, Cingulata, Artiodactyla, Pilosa, Lagomorpha, Perissodactyla) and from 23,010 individuals of 98 species of volant mammals (Chiroptera). The traits reported include body mass, age, sex, reproductive stage, as well as the geographic coordinates of sampling for all taxa. Moreover, we gathered information on forearm length for bats and body length and tail length for rodents and marsupials. No copyright restrictions are associated with the use of this data set. Please cite this data paper when the data are used in publications. We also request that researchers and teachers inform us of how they are using the data.
