The Economic Sustainability of Tourism Growth through Leakage Calculation

Fernando J. Garrigos-Simon; José Luis Galdón-Salvador; Ignacio Gil-Pechuan

The development and growth of tourism depend on its sustainability over time and on its benefits for destinations as a whole. However, calculating sustainability is not an easy task. This article focuses on the economic sustainability of tourism growth and, after an exhaustive review of the literature, proposes a quantitative mathematical model to measure it by analysing and calculating leakage in the hotel sector. Leakage analyses the amount of revenue generated by tourists that does not remain in the destination economy. Through a sample of 204 interviews with managers, this study validates the model created and calculates leakage in a mass tourism destination (the Valencian Region in Spain). The paper opens new areas of research in sustainability literature and will be of value to tourism planners and governments in their efforts to implement appropriate tourism development policies.

Crowdsourcing as a Competitive Advantage for New Business Models

Fernando J. Garrigos-Simon; Yeamduan Narangajavana; José Luis Galdón-Salvador

The current organizational environment is characterized by the evolution and transformation of information and communication technologies, the eruption of social networks, and, with it, the growing importance of the participation of customers and other contributors in the behavior of these firms. Participating customers are increasingly influencing the development of marketing initiatives in the production process of firms, while the development of social networks and online communities has engendered new business or strategic models where diverse participants in social networks are becoming the crucial element for success. Taking into account these facts, this chapter focuses on the importance of this participation through the development of “crowdsourcing”. The chapter defines the concept, analyzes its possible uses for the improvement of different organizational areas, and finally explains the crowdsourcing implementation process via a series of steps. The study is important as it opens up new areas of research in the literature and also provides some practical analysis and examples of its use by organizations.

Improving Hotel Industry Processes Through Crowdsourcing Techniques

José Luis Galdón-Salvador; Fernando J. Garrigos-Simon; Ignacio Gil-Pechuan

Innovation plays a critical role in the competitiveness of tourism organisations, especially in an environment which has changed radically as a result of advances in information and communication technologies, which are deeply transforming the tourism industry. Firms are being forced to create new business models and original techniques across their value chains in order to meet these new challenges, improve their results and in some cases, simply survive. One of the newest and most relevant activities being used by organisations is crowdsourcing, an activity defined as taking a specific task and outsourcing it to a large group of people via the internet, through an open call. This technique is particularly popular in marketing and although its development in other company areas is also relevant, few studies, especially in tourism literature, have researched its use for other purposes, such as improving the different processes in the value chain. In this paper, we delve into the concept of crowdsourcing as an element of a new business model. In this vein and after close examination of the previous literature, we analyse relevant examples of crowdsourcing in different firms so as to study and implement it to improve different processes in the hotel industry’s value chain. The results show that crowdsourcing techniques can be used throughout firms, as they are useful in improving the diverse activities of hotels.

Pervasive information gathering and data mining for efficient business administration

Fernando J. Garrigos-Simon; Roberto Llorente; Maria Morant; Yeamduan Narangajavana

Following a multidisciplinary perspective (that combines the literature from management, information systems, marketing and engineering telecommunications perspectives), the purpose of this article is to create and analyze a conceptual framework and to propose a new methodology that encompasses different techniques for pervasive information gathering in hotels and for identifying clients’ habits. Focusing on the future of hotels, this work presents new technologies for hotels suitable for correlating the customers’ on-site activities with online activities including passive location tracking using Wi-Fi devices’ connectivity, customer satisfaction evaluated via facial or voice recognition using inbuilt cameras/microphones altogether with data mining analysis. Moreover, this article explains how multidisciplinary consumer behavior can be analyzed by data mining to include this information in the vacation marketing approach for efficient business administration.

From Crowdsourcing to the Use of Masscapital. The Common Perspective of the Success of Apple, Facebook, Google, Lego, TripAdvisor, and Zara

Fernando J. Garrigos-Simon; Yeamduan Narangajavana

In the organizational arena, outsourcing processes and the creation of company networks are becoming obsolete in light of the new era of globalization. In the new framework, some mechanisms such as crowdsourcing, defined as outsourcing to the crowd, and essentially the capturing, management, or use of what we call “Masscapital,” defined as the capabilities of the mass relevant to the organization, are the answer to new changes. This chapter analyzes the importance of crowdsourcing and its evolution in the so-called management of “Masscapital” and looks at how they are becoming the new business model which is changing the arena of competition. This chapter explains how the most successful companies in the current business environment base their success on the use of what we call “Masscapital” and gives some recommendations about the use of space, time, and volume, in the success of its use as the key competitive factor for organizations.

Análise comparativa das atitudes comportamentais de passageiros de cruzeiro norte-americanos e espanhóis

Santiago Forgas-Coll; Ramon Palau-Saumell; Javier Sánchez-García; Fernando J. Garrigos-Simon

Earlier studies of cross-national differences in consumer behavior in different consumption sectors have verified that cultural differences have a strong influence on consumers. Despite the importance of cross-national analysis, no studies in the literature examine the moderating effects of nationality on the construction of behavioral intentions and their antecedents among cruise line passengers. This study investigates the moderating effects of nationality on the relationships between perceived value, satisfaction, trust and behavioral intentions among Spanish and (U.S.) American passengers of cruise lines that use Barcelona as home port and port-of-call. A theoretical model was tested with a total of 968 surveys. Structural equation models (SEMs) were used, by means of a multigroup analysis. Results of this study indicated that Spaniards showed stronger relationships between trust and behavioral intentions, and between emotional value and satisfaction. Americans presented stronger relationships between service quality and satisfaction, and between service quality and behavioral intentions.
