Abstract The present study investigated the effects of loneliness, depression and perceived social support on problematic Internet use among university students. The participants were 459 students at two universities in Turkey. The study data were collected with a Questionnaire Form, Problematic Internet Use Scale (PIUS), University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale (Version 3), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance were conducted to examine the differences; and correlation and regression analyses were used to examine the relationships between variables. There was a positive significant correlation between the PIUS and MSPSS and the UCLA Loneliness Scale and a negative significant correlation between the PIUS and Beck Depression Scale (BDS). The female students had higher total PIUS scores. The results also illustrated that there was a statistically significant difference in total PIUS scores according to having a social network account.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of infiltration and extravasation among children staying in a children’s hospital and the interventions carried out when infiltration or extravasation occurred. Methods: A prospective and descriptive research design was used in the study, conducted between September 2015 and February 2016, and determined the prevalence of infiltration and extravasation and their characteristics. The study sample consisted of 297 peripheral catheters in 173 pediatric patients. Results: Of 297 peripheral catheters, 50.8% were located on the right and 30.6% were inserted in the dorsal metacarpal vein. Infiltration and extravasation occurred in 2.9% and 2.3% of the patients, respectively. The prevalence of infiltration and extravasation was 5.5 and 4.4 per 1000 patient-days, respectively. The applied interventions after infiltration or extravasation included covering with a gauze dressing or alcohol-soaked cotton, cold application, irrigation with physiological saline, and elevation. Conclusion: The infiltration and extravasation prevalence were found to be high, but the interventions to address them were inadequate. Training and implementation strategies should be planned for pediatric nurses to prevent infiltration and extravasation.

The study was conducted methodologically to adapt the Adapted Rhodes Index of Nausea and Vomiting for Pediatrics by Child (ARINVc) and Adapted Rhodes Index of Nausea and Vomiting for Pediatrics by Parent (ARINVp) into Turkish. The scales are administered to children who receive chemotherapy and to their parents, respectively. The study sample consisted of 8- to 18-year-old children who were hospitalized in the pediatric oncology and hematology clinics of a university hospital, met the sampling criteria, and agreed to participate in the research. The study data were collected with the Sociodemographic Attributes Information Form, ARINVc, and ARINVp using the face-to-face interview method. The mean ages of the children and their mothers and fathers who participated in the study were 13.26 ± 2.01, 36.33 ± 5.10, and 40.17 ± 4.94 years, respectively. The mean total scores obtained from the ARINVc and ARINVp were 5.43 ± 4.06 and 5.70 ± 3.77, respectively. While Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficients of the scales were .85 for the ARINVc and .84 for the ARINVp, the item-total correlation coefficients were between 0.60 and 0.89 for the ARINVc and between 0.66 and 0.85 for the ARINVp (P < .01). The Turkish versions of ARINVc and ARINVp were determined to be valid and reliable scales.

PURPOSE To compare standardized flushing methods with aseptic non-touch technique; (1) Manually prepared syringes (2) Single-use prefilled flush syringes. METHOD Forty-eight PHO patients with Hickman or Port catheters were recruited to participate in a prospective, randomized study. Standardized flushing methods with aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT) using single-use pre-filled flush syringes (intervention group) or manually prepared syringes (control group) also included the pulsatile technique, use of 10-mL syringe size with 0.9% NaCl for flushing, flushing once a day, flushing training of the nurses. The effects of standardized flushing methods on occlusion and CLABSI evaluated. RESULTS Of the patients in the intervention group, 8.7% (n: 2) had catheter occlusion, while this rate was 20.0% (n: 5) in the control group. Of the patients in the intervention group, 8.7% (n: 2) had CLABSI, while this rate was 36.0% (n: 9) in the control group. While there was no difference in occlusion, there was a difference between the groups in terms of CLABSI development. In the intervention group, CLABSI rate was 1.9/1000 per catheter-days, in the control group CLABSI rate was 10.1/1000 per catheter-days. In the intervention group, occlusion rate was 1.9/1000 per catheter-days, in the control group, occlusion rate was 5.6/1000 per catheter-days. CONCLUSION Standardized flushing and single-use prefilled flush syringes are effective in reducing CLABSI rates in PHO patients.

Nurdan Akçay Didişen; Seyda Binay; Figen Yardimci

ABSTRACT This study was designed to determine the self-care needs of pediatric patients with pneumonia according to Orems Self-care Theory and to present them for nursing care. Establishing a scientific ground is one of the primary purposes of a professional discipline as well as a sine qua non of professionalization. Nursing is an applied medical discipline based on a professional philosophy, theory, practice and research. Orem, a leading theoretician of nursing practice, points out an interaction between human beings and their environment. Orem also argues that human beings are unique and unitary beings and that they cannot be separated from their environment and accordingly, delineates the components of his nursing theory into humans, health, environment, and nursing practice. This paper, therefore, discusses Orems theory of self-care deficiency in relation to pneumonia.

Modern bilim ve teknolojide hızla meydana gelen gelişmeler geleneksel çocuk oyunlarının yaşatılacağı ortamların günden güne azalmasına ve yeni nesil gençlerin gelişen teknolojiyle kendini sokaklardan eve, geleneksel oyunlardan elektronik alanın oyunlarına çektiği görülmektedir. Bu araştırma ilköğretim öğrencilerinin geleneksel çocuk oyunlarını oynama durumlarının ve etkileyen etmenlerin incelenmesi amacıyla planlanmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini İzmir ilinde bulunan iki İlköğretim Okulunda 2010-2012 eğitim öğretim yıllarında öğretim gören ve araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 310 öğrenci oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada, araştırmacılar tarafından literatür doğrultusunda geliştirilerek hazırlanan anket formu kullanılarak, öğrencilerin sosyo-demografik özellikleri, bilgisayar ve televizyon (TV) izleme durumları ve geleneksel çocuk oyunlarını oynama ve bilme durumları sorgulanmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirmesi SPSS programı kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde yaygınlık ölçütleri (ortalama, sayı ve yüzde dağılımları, standart sapma, standart hata) ve ki-kare testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin %63.3’ünün arkadaşları ile oyun oynamayı sevdiği, %29’unun futbol/basketbol/voleybol, %38.7’sinin günde 1-2 saat, %33.4’ünün okulda oyun oynadığı belirlenmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin %50.3’ü günde 1-2 saat televizyon izlemekte olup, %93.2’sinin bilgisayarının internete bağlı olduğu, günlük ortalama 1.4±0.9 saat internet kullandığı saptanmıştır. Öğrencilerin %60’ından fazlasının körebe, saklambaç, yakan top, seksek, istop gibi oyunları oynadıkları; %70’inden fazlasının ise dönmece, çelik çomak, kemik, sekiz kuyulu taş, hacı yatmaz, yedi kiremit, sıçratan top; %90’undan fazlasının kazık, gömme çelik, dokuz kordol, pembe nine, ben çarşıya gittim, topal karga, patlangaç, yattı kalktı, kale, kasa kasa gibi oyunları bilmedikleri belirlenmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin çoğu, geleneksel oyunlarımızdan birçoğunu bilmemektedir. Çocuklara, kültürel değerlerimizi oyun aracılığıyla öğretebilir ve aynı zamanda bilişsel, psikososyal ve fiziksel gelişim alanlarına katkıda bulunabiliriz.
