The Influence of Culture on Negotiati on Styles of Brazilian Executives

Filipe Sobral; Eugênio Carvalhal; Filipe Almeida

Culture profoundly influences how people think, communicate, and behave. Successful cross‐cultural negotiations require an understanding of the negotiation style of those on the other side of the table, and the acceptance and respect of their cultural beliefs and norms. The focus of this paper is to identify the styles of negotiation that tend to be adopted by Brazilian negotiators. Participants were 683 experienced negotiators from 22 Brazilian states. The Brazilian style of negotiation is described based on seven culturally sensitive dimensions that are present in negotiations: the nature of the activity, the role of the individual, uncertainty and time, communication, trust, protocol, and outcomes.

Parcerias público-privadas: análise comparativa das experiências britânica e brasileira

Alketa Peci; Filipe Sobral

The Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) are part of the reforms adopted by the Brazilian government aiming to increase private sector participation in areas characterized by the lack of public investments. The PPP are presented as a new strategy for recovering the public investment capacity, highlighting their successful application abroad, specially, in United Kingdom. This paper presents a comparative analysis of PPP models adopted in England with the Brazilian model. It aims identifying the principal similarities, as well as pointing out the differences revealed during the transfer process to the Brazilian context. Some of the conclusions highlight the reduced application of the model in the Brazilian environment as a consequence of the reduced application of key-concepts like: risk transfer to private sector, instruments for evaluating the actual improvement of the efficiency of the public service management.

Emoções, inteligência e negociação: um estudo empírico sobre a percepção dos gerentes portugueses

Filipe Almeida; Filipe Sobral

The research on negotiation in business environment has been focused mainly in the negotiation processes and decision making issues, neglecting the role of personal characteristics. Recent research has drawn attention to the impact of the negotiator intelligence on negotiation outcomes. This paper aims to analyze the importance of Cognitive Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence on business context negotiations. For this purpose, it was conducted an empirical research on the perceptions of top management executives of the 500 largest Portuguese companies, inquiring about the importance of personal characteristics and emotion on negotiation outcomes. Results show that managers emphasize cognitive over emotional aspects. It is also suggested that the control of emotions and their visibility have a positive impact on negotiators success, even though emotional manipulation is disapproved as a negotiation tactic. This study has descriptive and exploratory purposes, contributing to develop foundations for future research that explores the role of emotion and intelligence in negotiation.

Linking demands to work-family conflict through boundary strength

Liliane Furtado; Filipe Sobral; Alketa Peci

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose and test a model to examine how the active management of work-family boundary strength acts as behavioral mechanism through which role-based factors – role demands and role identity – influence the conflict experienced by individuals. Design/methodology/approach Three studies were conducted to examine the proposed model. Studies 1 and 2 used an experimental design to test the causal effects of role demands on the strength of work and family boundaries, whereas Study 3 surveyed 389 working professionals to test the interactional and mediating effects of the model variables on inter-role conflict. Findings Results suggest that increasing demands in one domain weaken the boundary strength around the cross-domain to make resource drain possible, which, in turn, increases the conflict experienced in that domain; moreover, results show that work identity reinforces the weakening of the boundary strength at home caused by increasing work demands. Research limitations/implications The study of boundary management decisions as an underlying mechanism through which individuals’ role-based factors affect work-family conflict (WFC) can offer new insights into how to manage increasing work-family responsibilities. Practical implications This study findings can help individuals to cope with role demands and organizations to promote a culture that supports work-family balance. Originality/value This paper advances WFC research by examining alternative mechanisms through which role demands influence WFC. Methodologically, the research improves on past studies by bringing together experimental and correlational designs.

The Psychological and Structural Determinants of Technology Integration in Organizations: An Empirical Study

Filipe Almeida; Filipe Sobral

The integration of information and communication technologies in a business context is currently an unquestionable strategic demand; however, companies do not always reveal identical information technology (IT) adoption levels. This paper addresses the manager’s attitude toward technology and the organizational structure as factors that may influence technological integration in a business context. The relationships among these variables are tested with a sample of Portuguese companies. Results support the hypothesis of manager’s attitude toward technology having an influence over the IT adoption level. However, the organizational structure adaptability seems not to have any influence on that same level. The results are discussed in light of current theory. This paper aims to highlight the important role of psychological and structural determinants in new technologies adoption processes in modern organizations.

The pathways that make me committed: a Dual-Process Model triggered by Newcomer Adjustment

Liliane Furtado; Filipe Sobral; Gazi Islam

The current paper proposes a dual-process model to explain how organizational socialization leads to newcomer commitment. We argue that cognitive and emotional pathways describe distinct psychological processes of socialization, leading to different types of commitment. Specifically, we argue that newcomer adjustment triggers an emotional path, leading to job satisfaction and affective commitment, and a cognitive path, leading to psychological contract fulfillment and normative commitment. Using a longitudinal data of 728 newcomers working for Brazilian Internal Revenue Service, we propose and test this model. Our findings strongly support the hypothesis that emotional and cognitive pathways operate independent channels to mediate the impact of newcomer adjustment on organizational commitment. Moreover, we observe that job satisfaction is a significant predictor of affective component of commitment and psychological fulfillment contract have a stronger impact on normative component of commitment. Based on...

It’s Not My Fault I’m the Boss: How Role, Timing, and Locus of Control affect Leadership Apologies

Felipe Fonseca de Araujo; Filipe Sobral; Liliane Furtado

Apologies are gaining increasing attention in literature on leadership, but little attention is being given to how apologies affect the transgressor. We use moral emotions as an indicator of the effect of apologies on the individual who commits the transgression. By doing so, we examine how leaders and followers differ in their emotions after apologizing. Data were collected from 591 individuals in an experimental study. Results showed that leaders felt stronger negative emotions after apologizing, compared to not apologizing. Followers, however, felt the same level of negative moral emotions, regardless of the apology. Also, leaders felt more guilt after a reactive apology, while followers experienced more guilt after a proactive apology. Finally, the stronger negative emotions felt by a leader after apologizing were only present when the locus of control for the transgression was external.
