O cha de Camellia sinensis e rico em compostos fenolicos antioxidantes, responsaveis por efeitos beneficos a saude humana. Neste trabalho, foram realizadas as determinacoes da concentracao de fenois totais e flavonoides de sete amostras comerciais dos chas preto e verde. Os teores de fenois totais variaram de 4,80 a 26,60 mg de pirogalol g -1 de amostra e os de flavonoides, de 0,46 a 1,10 mg de quercetina g -1 de amostra. A analise anatomica do conteudo das amostras permitiu caracterizar a autenticidade dos produtos, observando-se os marcadores anatomicos tipicos da especie (estomatos anomociticos, tricomas tectores unicelulares, mesofilo dorsiventral, drusas de oxalato de calcio e esclereides).

Cordyline dracaenoides, known as Uvarana, is a tree that is found and spread throughout the region of “Campos Gerais” in the State of Parana, Brazil. In this work, the immunomodulatory and citotoxicity of crude extract and microbiological activity of hexanic, chloroformic, ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts were investigated. Furthermore, the phytochemical screening of the partionated extracts was analyzed and the extracts revealed the possible presence of terpenes, sterols and polyphenolic compounds (PC). It was confirmed by the measurement from Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, and it corresponds to 0.99 μg of catechin equivalent/mg of the extract and HPLC analysis. Microbiological assays showed that the extracts were active against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and it was determined that in chlorophormic, ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts, there are some compounds that are responsible for this activity. The immunomodulatory and citotoxicity effects were determined against the models evaluated, showing a dose-dependent effect for the crude extract.

Iodine is an essential micronutrient in the production of thyroid hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine. The regular consumption of iodine is a common strategy to avoid iodine deficiency problems. The commercial salt is consumed regularly, making it the ideal vehicle for the iodine consumption. In the 70s, Brazil adopted the salt iodations as a strategy to reduce the prevalence of endemic goiter and cretinism removal. This research describes the quality evaluation of six commercial samples of salt. The Mohr’s method, the metric complex with EDTA iodine metric analysis were used to determine the purity of NaCl, the content of iodine and the limit of calcium (as an impurity), respectively. In addition, a semi quantitative method, using a strip of filter paper impregnated with iodized starch gum, was proposed for the detection of iodine in salt. The results showed four samples containing iodine above the allowed quantity (20 - 60 mg/kg). None of the samples showed the required purity (over 99%). The semi quantitative method allowed the quick detection of the iodine presence in salt samples.
