In Menorca, some protected coastal areas included in the regional network of natural areas (ANEI, Natural Areas of Special Interest) support a huge recreational pressure derived from tourism. Knowing the user’s habits on these areas as well as their perception constitutes a key tool to properly manage these coastal zones and their social request. It also can help to avoid or alleviate, as far as possible, environmental and social impacts.

In Balearic Islands, traditional methods for cleaning beaches have affected the beachdune systems to a worring extent. In Menorca, in order to mitigate the impact related with cleaning processes, some geomorphological and environmental criteria have recently been adopted. The first results include the recovering of beach vegetation, unaltered foredunes and a less altered beach profile, as well as a decrease in negative sediment budget.

This study is a first approach to calculate sand erosion induced by human access to beaches. Many studies and papers deal with the amount of sand that leaves beach systems adhered to beach users and objects, but none presents reliable data on which to predict human induced sand loss. An exhaustive sampling has been done in 12 beaches of Minorca in order to obtain a rate of loss per beach user. The obtained results reflect an average of 33,64 g by user.

The future of the Balearic Island tourist model has become a popular topic in the last few years. The increase in the number of tourists, society’s growing awareness of the overcrowding and the legislative amendments to the types of tourism have sparked off debate in academic, media and political forums and even in society. The positive effects of the tourist activities on the economy of the Balearic Islands and its labour market are quite clear. Tourism continues to be the economic driving force in Spanish Mediterranean coastal communities. It is also a fact that the growth model of the last few decades, which has focused too much on the reproduction of mass tourism, known as “balearization” that has been exported to other continents, in the long run, has produced a related loss of economic and social well-being, thus exacerbating the feeling of saturation, which is why there are doubts about whether the load capacity that the resources can withstand can actually be surpassed in the next few years.

The morphosedimentary evolution of sa Rapita beach (South of Mallorca) has been altered by the construction, in 1977, of a marina located to the NW. The most important consequence has been the alteration of the littoral drift, as the port acts as a sediment trap. This inhibits the distribution of the sediment along the beach. The beach has suffered significant erosion from 1977 to the present. From this date, the marina sector has increased its surface by an average of 0.5 m/a, while the rest of the beach has been eroded on average between -0.19 and -0.34 m/a. The study was conducted with the help of a Geographic Information System and the Digital Shoreline Analysis System tool, to quantify erosive processes over a period between 1956 and 2012.
