This paper demonstrates the possibility to predict a battery systems performance in a fire resistance test according to the new amendment of United Nations Regulation No. 100 “Uniform Provisions Concerning the Approval of Vehicles with Regard to Specific Requirements for the Electric Power Train” (R100) based on careful measurements of the physical properties of the casing material, as well as modeling of the battery modules and computer simulations. The methodology of the work consists of estimating the heat transfer coefficients by using a gasoline pool fire model in the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software FireDynamicsSimulator (FDS), followed by finite-element (FE) calculations of the temperatures in the battery

The three components of the Enveco tool each have different methods of expressing their sensitivity to variations in input parameters and in estimation of the uncertainty of their results. In this section the individual sensitivity/uncertainty analyses are discussed first and then, in an overall sense, sensitivity to variations in the input parameters is examined.

The Enveco tool makes use of a simple spreadsheet platform. The user enters data in the “Input” worksheet that is divided into four areas: Risk of Fire Spread, Warehouse Description, Contents Description, and Fire Service Response. These input areas are discussed in more detail in the following sections. The white cells in the “Value” column allow the user to input data. Pop-up comments are used with some of the white cells to instruct the user, for example to input only positive numbers. Metric or British units can be selected in the “Unit” column for relevant input. Default values are given whenever possible and are based on referenced literature. The only cells the user can change are the white input cells and, in some cases, the units cells.
