OBJECTIVE to determine the incidence and associations of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder (CD), and substance abuse disorder (SAD) in adolescents in conflict with the law in a Brazilian cohort. METHODS the Brazilian version of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged-Children (K-SADS-PL) was administered to 69 adolescent boys who were incarcerated for 45 days in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. RESULTS mean age was 15.5 years (range, 12-16.9 years) and most adolescents originated from disadvantaged social classes (87%). They resided in neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city or towns in the greater metropolitan area. Truancy and low educational achievement were common, with 73.9% not currently attending school and 43.4% not having finished the 5th grade. The great majority lived in single-parent families and many had relatives who themselves had problems with the law. Psychiatric disorders were apparent in 81.1% of the subjects, with the most common disorders being CD (59.4%), SAD (53.6%), and ADHD (43.5%). Both ADHD (p <0.001) and CD (p <0.01) had significant associations with substance abuse. CONCLUSION in male adolescents in conflict with the law, ADHD, CD, and SAD were all found to be associated with delinquency.

PURPOSE: to evaluate the burden of family caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorders, as perceived by themselves. METHODS: 20 subjects participated, of both genders, aged between 22 and 60 years (mean = 32.6), ten families of children with autism spectrum disorders and, to compose the control group, ten family members of children with disorders language. The children were between three and ten years of age (Mean = 5.8). The control group was selected from the pairing of age, education and gender of children. In order to evaluate the caregiver burden Scale was used Burden Interview and sociodemographic data were collected from participants. The statistical analysis was performed from the Mann-Whitney and Spearman correlation analysis (p <.05). RESULTS: mean overload index of family caregivers of both groups was 28, therefore, no difference was observed statistically significant and indicated that the G1 and G2 were moderately overloaded. Participant characteristics were not significant in overload index. CONCLUSIONS: caring for children with autism spectrum disorders can overwhelm their families similarly to the relatives of children with other disorders of development.

Purpose This study aimed to analyze prosodic elements of speech segments of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and compare with the control group, using an acoustic analysis. Methods Speech recordings were performed with a sample of individuals with ASD (n = 19) and with typical development (n = 19) of the male gender, age range: 8-33 years. The prosody questionnaire ALIB (Brazilian Linguistic Atlas) was used as script, which contains interrogative, affirmative and imperative sentences. Data were analyzed using the PRAAT software and forwarded to statistical analysis in order to verify possible significant differences between the two groups studied in each prosodic parameter evaluated (fundamental frequency, intensity and duration) and its respective variables. Results There were significant differences for the variables tessitura, melodic amplitude of tonic vowel, melodic amplitude of pretonic vowel, maximum intensity, minimum intensity, tonic vowel duration, pretonic vowel duration and phrase duration. Conclusion Individuals with ASD present significant differences in prosody compared to those with typical development. It is noteworthy, however, the necessity of additional studies on the characterization of prosodic aspects of speech of individuals with ASD with a larger sample and a more restricted age group.Purpose This study aimed to analyze prosodic elements of speech segments of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and compare with the control group, using an acoustic analysis. The progressive success of therapeutic plans for malignant neoplasias that started in childhood allowed an important increase in the survival rate of carriers during the last decades. However, late sequelae secondary to the toxicity of such plans shall be duly monitored. Considering the importance of evaluating the aspects of physical and mental health, as well as emotional and social factors of the survivors, the quality of life of the interviewed persons was evaluated by an alternative approach: telephone calls. The SF-36 questionnaire (Medical Outcomes Study 36 – Item Short Form Health Survey), validated for the Portuguese language, was applied to thirty persons with more than 18 years of age and of both sexes, survivors of acute lymphocytic leukemia, without antineoplastic therapy for at least five years, under medical attendance at the Ambulatory outside the ITACI therapy (experimental group), and also to thirty healthy persons, matched by sex and age to the experimental group (control group). Analyzed survivors scored higher in all aspects SF-36 than the average value. The average results of the total points were statistically similar to the control group. SF-36 provides valuable data for the health team to establish therapeutic procedures to survivors. Evaluation by phone became an important resource in the ambulatory follow-up of this population. Survivors of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia are presently showing appropriate scores of quality of life. The progressive success of therapeutic plans for malignant neoplasias that started in childhood allowed an important increase in the survival rate of carriers during the last decades.
