The widespread introduction of satellite imagery with several spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions is a real opportunity to analyze and characterize the urban environment. These last few years, the Object-Based Image Analysis OBIA approach has been largely developed and applied for urban applications. However, a major issue in this approach is domain knowledge formalization and exploitation. In this paper, after a detailed presentation of related works in the domain of semantic interpretation using ontologies, a taxonomy of urban objects and a framework to describe urban objects and their spatial organization is presented. This taxonomy is then formalized in a domain ontology using the semantic web ontology language and rules OWL and SWRL.

Conceptual design is the first step in mechatronic products development process. In this paper, a conceptual semantic design methodology for mechatronic products family development is proposed. Thus, we go from the specification to a set of classes of solutions satisfying requirements and likely to meet performance constraints such as maintainability, availability, reliability, safety, recyclability. The proposed methodology allows us to take into account the various skills of designers who can participate in the design process. It, also, takes into account the actors that participate to the manufacturing process. This methodology combines collaborative, concurrent, parametric and constraint-based design and is also compatible with V-Model and systematic design.

The paper presents a system for querying a base of HTML documents in natural language for a limited domain. Different small French corpora (heart surgery, newspaper articles, papers on natural language processing) are used for testing the prototype. The domain knowledge, represented in description logics (DL), is used for filtering the results of the search and is extended dynamically as result of DL inference mechanisms. The system uses shallow natural language parsing techniques and DL reasoning mechanisms are used to handle incomplete or incorrect user queries.

In this paper we propose an approach of how to use description logics for modeling the case base for case-based reasoning. We illustrate our approach by applying it to hybrid diagnosis. Integrating model-based and case-based reasoning for diagnostic problem solving we contribute to the domain of real time diagnosis. We describe the architecture of this approach, and present some preliminary experimental results. The case-based reasoning component of the hybrid diagnosis system is enabled to exploit description logic inferences for classifying and querying the case base. As description logic interpreter we use the system CICLOP, whereas the diagnosis system is implemented in G2. The description logic system runs as a server application and can thus be queried by the diagnosis system.
