Currently, implementation of standard methods for chemical analysis relies upon the expertise of an analyst for conversion of the methods into usable procedures and for reproducible execution of these procedures. One can now encapsulate standard methods in a database format which can be transferred among laboratories. These methods can then be converted automatically to reproducible procedures for specific samples types. This paper describes the application of these software techniques to standard methods for microwave sample dissolution.

The issues associated with nuclear energy and security encompass a broad range of topics from diverse disciplines. This diversity often makes it difficult to locate reliable sources of information on these important topics. The Alsos Digital Library for Nuclear Issues provides a searchable collection of vetted annotations of references on a wide range of nuclear topics. Recently, the Alsos library joined Nuclear Pathways, a composite website encompassing nuclear issues, which currently integrates four high quality websites, each with its own specialty and mission. All are members of the National Science Digital Library, a comprehensive scientific resource in the USA. The Nuclear Pathways websites bring together many aspects of crucial issues of our time for the people who need the information the most ? policy makers, scientists, educators, students and ordinary citizens.

A valuable resource for physics, the Alsos Digital Library for Nuclear Issues1 (see Fig. 1) is well worth an exploratory visit by teachers of introductory physics and their students. It provides a searchable collection of vetted annotations of references including books, articles, films, websites, and CD-ROMs. While many of those resources focus on the history of nuclear physics and its applications to weapons and nuclear power production, the library also contains materials on the military, social, geopolitical, and cultural consequences of those applications.

The fascinating recollections of one of the most brilliant and controversial scientists of the 20th century. . The story of Edward Teller is the story of the twentieth century. Born in Hungary in 1908, Teller witnessed the rise of Nazism and anti-Semitism, two world wars, the McCarthy era, and the changing face of big science. A brilliant and controversial figure whose work on nuclear weapons was key to the American war effort, Teller has long believed in freedom through strong defense, a philosophy reflected in his stance on arms control and nuclear policy. These extraordinary recollections at last reveal the man behind the headlines-passionate and humorous, devoted and loyal. In clear and compelling prose, Teller tells of the people, events, and ideas that shaped him as a scientist, beginning with his early love of music and math, and continuing with his study of quantum physics with Werner Heisenberg. Present at many of the pivotal moments in modern science, Teller also describes his friendships with some of the centurys greatest minds-Einstein, Bohr, Fermi, Szilard, von Neumann, Oppenheimer-and offers an honest account of the development of the atomic and hydrogen bombs. He also offers a moving portrait of his childhood, his marriage and family life, and his friendship with physicist Maria Mayer. Writing about those aspects of his life that have had important public consequences-from his conservative politics to his relationships with scientists and presidents-Teller reveals himself to be a man with deep beliefs about liberty, security, and the moral responsibility of science.
