Abstract The bacterial degradation of 1-(5-nitrofurfurylideneamino)-2-imidazolidinone (NF-246) has been studied by using Escherichia coli as the test organism. It has been determined that the aminofuran analogue, 1-(5-aminofurfurylideneamino)-2-imidazolidinone (F-305), is not an intermediate in this process and that the major product (60–70% conversion) is the open-chain nitrile, 3-(4-cyano-2-oxobutylideneamino)-2-imidazolidinone (U-813). A metabolic pathway for this conversion is postulated.
