In Praise of the Little Phallus: On J. M. Coetzee’s Contribution to Neophilologus

Frans Ruiter

‘Erasmus’ Praise of Folly: Rivalry and Madness’ by J. M. Coetzee was published in 1992 in the January issue of Neophilologus. In hindsight, it can be said that it was an important text, both for Coetzee and for his commentators, who frequently refer to it. Not only does Coetzee present an interesting interpretation of Erasmus’ canonical book, in addition he also probes his own authorship in the light of Erasmus’ satire. In my commentary I want to make clear what exactly Coetzee meant with this spirit of Erasmus, and why it was so important to him.
