Synchronization Performance of the Precision Time Protocol

Chongning Na; Dragan Obradovic; Ruxandra Scheiterer; Günter Steindl; Franz-Josef Goetz

This paper analyzes the factors that affect the synchronization performance in using the precision time protocol (FTP). We first study the influence of jitter under the assumption of no frequency drifts. Then we study the influence of frequency drift in the absence of jitter. The analytic formulas provide a theoretical ground for the understanding of simulation results as well as guidelines for choosing both system and control parameters when applying FTP.

A novel method for auto configuration of Realtime Ethernet Networks

Jahanzaib Imtiaz; Juergen Jasperneite; Karl Weber; Franz-Josef Goetz; Gunnar Lessmann

This paper describes a novel method for layer-2 auto-configuration of realtime Ethernet networks. Our approach is able to roll out local MAC addresses to the involved devices as well as to discover the topology automatically on top of LLDP. The description of the complete network topology is realized with a minimum amount of data and includes a systematically propagation towards the topology manager. A model-driven development approach has been adopted to verify the concept by using simulation technique.

1μs-conform line length of the Transparent Clock Mechanism defined by the Precision Time Protocol (PTP Version 2)

Ruxandra Scheiterer; Chongning Na; Dragan Obradovic; Günter Steindl; Franz-Josef Goetz

This paper quantifies the ldquo1 mus-conformrdquo line-length of the Transparent Clock Mechanism of peer-to-peer Precision Time Protocol (PTP Version 2), i.e. the number of elements that stay within the plusmn1 mus sync error tolerance, for crystal oscillator output frequencies of 100 MHz, 250 MHz, 500 MHz and 1 GHz, i.e. for time quantization errors of 10 ns, 4 ns, 2 ns and 1 ns.

Synchronization performance of the Precision Time Protocol in the face of slave clock frequency drift

Ruxandra Scheiterer; Chongning Na; Dragan Obradovic; Günter Steindl; Franz-Josef Goetz

This paper studies the performance of the precision time protocol (PTP) of the IEEE 1588 standard for drifting slave frequencies. The error expression for the master time estimate at the nth slave is analytically derived and demonstrated in simulation runs. We show that single-slave frequency drift is very benign compared to master frequency drift, which is only matched by all slaves drifting.

Synchronization performance of the Precision Time Protocol: Effect of clock frequency drift on the line delay computation

Ruxandra Scheiterer; Dragan Obradovic; Chongning Na; Günter Steindl; Franz-Josef Goetz

The Precision Time Protocol (PTP) of the IEEE 1588 standard relies on two processes: the timing propagation process and the line delay estimation process. It is important to study the factors that affect the quality of these synchronization sub-processes, in order to expand the limit on the number of slaves synchronizable within a given synchronization precision. This short work-in-progress paper analytically studies the sensitivity of the line delay computation to linear clock frequency drift.

Enhancement of the Precision Time Protocol in Automation Networks with a Line Topology

Chongning Na; Dragan Obradovic; Ruxandra Scheiterer; Günter Steindl; Franz-Josef Goetz

Abstract The precision time protocol (PTP) delivered by the IEEE 1588 standard has been proven to be an appropriate network synchronization protocol, which is widely applied in the areas of industrial automation, measurement and control, telecommunications and more. Many factors restrict the performance of the PTP protocol. In this paper, we highlight the influence of frequency drift on the synchronization performance. Based on analytic study, we develop an algorithm to improve the protocol, which is verified by simulation.
