SIMPLIFY — Application Specific Data Preparation

A long term goal of product design is to directly go from a virtual model to the production. Models created with today’s CAD tools, usually are surface/face models. Additionally, the models become more and more complete and detailed, including all rounding and facets. Due to this, huge amounts of data are created along the planning and the design phase. The more complete the description of the CAD parts is, the more data must by handled. What on one side must be rated as a benefit (a complete and with that a clear description of the part), becomes on the other side a disadvantage, if one likes to do calculations or simulations with these data. To reduce the calculation time to a justifiable extent, simplifying assumptions about the geometric shape of the parts are necessary and permissible. Due to the fact of large amounts of data created for each car and its variants in the automotive industry, a manual simplification of the data is not sensible. An approach for automatic data preparation is introduced in this article, a prototype will be described.
