BACKGROUND–Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a syndrome encompassing the clinical expression of frontal or temporal lobe degeneration. The many clinical phenotypes of FTD include primary progressive aphasias and a more common frontotemporal degeneration with less marked language alteration but significant behavioral changes. SUMMARY–This paper describes the clinical progression of neuropsychiatric symptoms among 62 predominantly behavioral presentations and 30 language presentations of FTD. Disinhibition and depression became common for both subject groups over the course of illness. Significantly more cases presenting with behavioral changes had apathy and disinhibition. CONCLUSIONS–Language presentations of FTD had longer latency to onset of distinct neuropsychiatric changes but eventually converge with the phenotype initially affected with behavioral change. Clinicians should anticipate such neuropsychiatric changes, prepare families for the course of illness in patients with either clinical presentation, and treat symptomatically with psychotropic medications to help families cope with behaviorally disturbed patients.

Satisfactory intrascrotal position of the testicles was achieved by dividing the spermatic vessels, leaving the vas deferens intact, in 3 patients with undescended testes. A postoperative scrotal scan provided objective means of evaluating the adequacy of testicular circulation. To determine the efficacy of various procedures for orchiopexy for undescended testes we suggest that postoperative evaluation include radionuclide imaging of the scrotum.

Abnormal uptake of gallium by kidneys was seen in 8 patients with sepsis. When employed judiciously, gallium scanning is valuable for investigation of renal and perirenal inflammatory lesions.

To ascertain the prognostic value of the radionuclide angiogram in ischemic cerebral vascular disease, we reviewed the results of this study in 2200 patients who underwent this procedure. The arterial phase showed decreased activity in 175 patients studied in detail during the acute phase of their neurologic illnesses. In the 120 patients who proved to have ischemic disease and persisting neurologic signs, two basic patterns appeared during the venous phase: (1) no increased (diminished or equal) perfusion, or (2) increased perfusion. Following the initial incident, the clinical course varied from no change to marked clinical improvement. In the first group with either diminished or equal venous perfusion, the chances against improvement are greater than 6:1. In the latter group the chances for improvement or deterioration are equal.
