Disruption of the vascular endothelium exposes blood to a subendothelial matrix, which includes collagen and the large adhesive glycoproteins von Willebrand factor (vWF), fibronectin, and others. These proteins contain domains, tripeptide sequences, recognized by specific cell surface receptors, allowing interaction of cells with the matrix. Platelets contain many receptors for adhesive proteins and are well adapted to adhere and spread on exposed subendo- thelium. Adhesion of platelets to the matrix involves receptors that can interact with more than one subendothe- lial protein, as well as adhesive proteins that can bind to more than one receptor.
