Interstitial hyperthermia and interstitial iridium 192 implantation: A technique and preliminary results

Cappil Joseph; Melvin Astrahan; James A. Lipsett; John O. Archambeau; Bruce Forell; Frederick W. George

Abstract A simple technique using interstitial hypertbermia in combination with interstitial Iridium 192 implantation is described in detail. This technique was initially tested on swine and later successfully tested on seven patients. The preliminary results of the City of Hope Interstitial Hyperthermia Pilot protocol are stated. The authors feel that this simple technique could be used by any radiation oncologist while performing interstitial implants in selected sites.

Factors influencing prognosis in the radiotherapeutic management of carcinoma of the prostate

James A. Lipsett; Malcolm D. Cosgrove; Nathan Green; John T. Casagrande; R. Wilbur Melbye; Frederick W. George

Abstract A total of 96 patients with adenocarcinoma of the prostate were irradiated with the intent to control the disease locally by two dissimilar techniques: pelvic irradiation with a prostatic boost vs pelvic and para-aortic irradiation with prostatic boost. Survival and local control of disease appeared to be enhanced by the use of adjuvant hormonal therapy. Advancing extent of disease, locally and distally, and the presence of disease within the lymph nodes affected prognosis adversely.

Cancer of the lung. An in-depth analysis of prognostic factors.

Nathan Green; S. S. Kurohara; Frederick W. George

The prognostic significance of clinicopathologic findings was evaluated in 617 cases of proven lung cancer seen at the San Diego Naval Hospital, from 1954 through 1965. The incidence of each clinicopathologic finding and the associated median survival in months were determined. Powerful prognostic factors were the anatomic extent and the sites of tumor spread. By adjusting for these prognostic factors, it was possible to assess the prognostic significance for other clinicopathologic findings. Age, histopathology, the presence or absence of symptoms, the symptoms of dyspnea, skeletal pain, and anorexia, the presence of acute pneumonia, asthenia, weight loss, pleural effusion, and the involvement of mediastinal and abdominal organs or the central nervous system were strong prognostic factors.

Radiation therapy in bulky seminoma

Nathan Green; Louis Lombardo; Eugene Broth; Leonard Skaist; Frederick W. George; Eugene Weinstein; Ronald Kaplan; Zbigniew Petrovich

Between 1969 and 1980, 17 patients with bulky retroperitoneal seminoma and 1 patient with bulky mediastinal seminoma were treated with radiation therapy. One patient had resection of gross retroperitoneal disease, and 1 patient had resection of gross mediastinal disease. Fifteen patients received adjuvant irradiation to the mediastinum and paraclavicular lymph nodes, and 1 patient received adjuvant chemotherapy. At last follow-up, 17 of 18 patients (94%) remain free of disease. No patient has sustained treatment-related morbidity or mortality.

A temperature regulating circuit for experimental localized current field hyperthermia systems

Melvin A. Astrahan; Frederick W. George

Interest in localized current field (LCF) hyperthermia tumor therapy is rapidly increasing. As yet, however, there is no integral LCF system commercially available. An experimental LCF system may be readily assembled from discrete, general purpose components, except for the tumor temperature regulating circuitry. In this article we present an LCF system designed around general purpose components and a simple circuit for temperature regulation. Comments on system safety, calibration, and performance are also included.
