The MOS Controlled Thyristor and its Limits

The MOS Controlled Thyristor (MCT) is turned on and off by the action of a high impedance MOS gate electrode. Due to a cellular, fine-structured cathode, this new generation of thyristors opens the way to using simple gate drive circuits in high power applications and offers considerable improvements of the dynamic behaviour as compared to conventional Gate Turn-Off thyristors (GTO’s).
