Abstract Massive English influence indicates that colloquial Afrikaans is converging with English. Aspects of this set of sweeping linguistic changes include codeswitching as well as wideranging phonological, lexical and grammatical borrowing. The profound linguistic influence of English on colloquial Afrikaans is driven by powerful semantic forces such as conceptualization, metaphor and stylistics. Strong anti-English purism has restricted the influence of English on Standard Afrikaans while at the same time contributing to the widening gulf between standard and colloquial varieties of Afrikaans. Continued large-scale English influence on Afrikaans may in the end compromise the integrity of Afrikaans as a distinct language.
