New Result in the Production and Decay of an Isotope, 278113, of the 113th Element

An isotope of the 113th element, i.e., 278 113, was produced in a nuclear reaction with a 70 Zn beam on a 209 Bi target. We observed six consecutive α-decays following the implantation of a heavy particle in nearly the same position in the semiconductor detector under an extremely low background condition. The fifth and sixth decays are fully consistent with the sequential decays of 262 Db and 258 Lr in both decay energies and decay times. This indicates that the present decay chain consisted of 278 113, 274 Rg ( Z =111), 270 Mt ( Z =109), 266 Bh ( Z =107), 262 Db ( Z =105), and 258 Lr ( Z =103) with firm connections. This result, together with previously reported results from 2004 and 2007, conclusively leads to the unambiguous production and identification of the isotope 278 113 of the 113th element.

Experiment on Synthesis of an Isotope 277112 by 208Pb+70Zn Reaction

The production and decay of 277 112 have been investigated using a gas-filled recoil ion separator in irradiations of 208 Pb targets with a 70 Zn beam at 349.5 MeV. We have observed two α-decay chains that can be assigned to subsequent decays from 277 112 produced in the 208 Pb( 70 Zn,n) reaction. After emitting four consecutive α-particles, both the chains terminate by spontaneous fission decays of 261 Rf, and the decay energies and decay times of both the chains obtained in the present work agree well with those reported by a group at Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung (GSI), Germany. The present result gives the first clear confirmation of the discovery of 277 112 and its α-decay product 273 Ds reported previously.

A Search for TeV Gamma-Ray Emission from the PSR B1259–63/SS 2883 Binary System with the CANGAROO-II 10 Meter Telescope

Observations of the PSR B1259-63/SS 2883 binary system using the CANGAROO-II Cerenkov telescope are reported. This nearby binary consists of a 48 ms radio pulsar in a highly eccentric orbit around a Be star and offers a unique laboratory to investigate the interactions between the outflows of the pulsar and Be star at various distances. It has been pointed out that the relativistic pulsar wind and the dense mass outflow of the Be star may result in the emission of gamma rays up to TeV energies. We have observed the binary in 2000 and 2001, ~47 and ~157 days after the 2000 October periastron. Upper limits at the 0.13-0.54 crab level are obtained. A new model calculation for high-energy gamma-ray emission from the Be star outflow is introduced, and the estimated gamma-ray flux, considering bremsstrahlung, inverse Compton scattering, and the decay of neutral pions produced in proton-proton interactions, is found to be comparable to the upper limits of these observations. Comparing our results with these model calculations, we constrain the mass-outflow parameters of the Be star.

Cangaroo III observations of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622

Sub-TeV gamma-ray emission from the northwest rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 was detected with the CANGAROO II telescope and recently confirmed by the HESS group. In addition, the HESS data revealed a very wide (up to 2° in diameter), shell-like profile of the gamma-ray emission. We carried out CANGAROO III observations in 2005 January and February with three telescopes and show here the results of threefold coincidence data. We confirm the HESS results about the morphology and the energy spectrum and find that the energy spectrum in the NW rim is consistent with that of the whole remnant.

Temporal variation of 7Be concentrations in atmosphere for 8 y from 2000 at Yamagata, Japan: solar influence on the 7Be time series

We have been continuously observing the daily (7)Be concentrations in surface air at Yamagata, Japan (38.25 degrees N, 140.35 degrees E) since 2000. The yearly profile of the (7)Be concentration indicates the variation in galactic cosmic rays owing to solar modulation. Over 8y, the (7)Be concentration, cosmic neutrons, and number of sunspots varied by 37.4%, 12.2%, and 92.8%, respectively. The influence of precipitation on the (7)Be variability was approximately 5%. Hence, the yearly (7)Be concentration was mainly varied by the solar modulation of the (7)Be production rates. Based on the production rates found in an EXPACS simulation, the observed variability indicates (7)Be transport from high latitudes. The daily (7)Be concentrations have two significant periodic components of 19d and 36d. The 36-d component implies a relationship between the suns rotation and the vertical transport of air masses under quiet solar activity.

Production and decay properties of 272111 and its daughter nuclei

The production and decay of 272 111 has been investigated using a gas-filled recoil ion separator in irradiations of 209 Bi targets with 64 Ni beam at 320, 323 and 326 MeV. We have observed 14 α-decay chains in total, that can be assigned, on the basis of their time correlations, to subsequent decays from 272 111 produced in the 209 Bi( 64 Ni,1n) reaction. The present result is the first clear confirmation for the discovery of 272 111 and its α-decay products, 264 Bh and 268 Mt, reported previously by a GSI group. New information on their half-lives and decay energies as well as the excitation function is presented.

Development of scintillation imaging device for cold neutrons

Abstract As an application of the wavelength-shifting (WLS) fiber technique recently developed in the field of high-energy physics, a novel type of imaging device for neutrons has been successfully investigated; a space resolution of 1 mm FWHM with detection efficiency of 55% for 10 A neutrons has been experimentally confirmed with a prototype made of a 0.5-mm-thick ZnS(Ag)+6LiF scintillator plate optically coupled to WLS fiber arrays. In addition to promising results obtained in this study, its simple structure and reliable operation allow us to foresee a new generation of imaging devices to meet the increasing demand for large-area and high space-resolution imaging devices for several new projects on spallation neutron sources in the world.

CANGAROO III Search for Gamma Rays from Centaurus A and the ω Centauri Region

We have observed the giant radio galaxy Centaurus A and the globular cluster ω Centauri in the TeV energy region using the CANGAROO III stereoscopic system. The system has been in operation since 2004 with an array of four Imaging Atmospheric Cerenkov Telescopes (IACT) with ~100 m spacings. The observations were carried out in 2004 March and April. In total, approximately 10 hr of data were obtained for each target. No statistically significant gamma-ray signal has been found above 420 GeV over a wide angular region (a 1° radius from the pointing center), and we derive flux upper limits using the wholefield of view. Implications for the total energy of cosmic rays and the density of the cold dark matter are considered.
