Lattice parameters and Debye temperatures of AgCdZn(α-phase) alloys

Abstract The ternary AgCdZn alloys form solid solutions in the f.c.c. phase up to about 30 at.% Cd and 20 at.% Zn in the silver lattice. Six ternary alloys of varying compositions of silver, cadmium and zinc were prepared from high purity starting materials by melting in an induction furnace. The integrated X-ray intensities of Bragg reflections from these alloys were collected at room temperature using a PW 1730 X-ray generator and a proportional counter. The experimental data were processed to obtain the values of lattice parameters, Debye-Waller factors, Debye temperatures θ m and root-mean-square amplitudes of vibration of atoms of the alloy specimens. The Debye temperature of the alloys varied between 191 and 225 K. It was found that θ m decreased with increasing cadmium concentration irrespective of the percentage of zinc present in the silver lattice.

An X-ray diffraction study on the microstructure of AgCdZn (α phase) alloys

The X-ray diffraction profiles of six ternary alloys of AgCdZn in the cubic α phase have been recorded using a Philips diffractometer. Peak shift, peak asymmetry and Fourier line shape analysis of the profiles are made in order to evaluate the microstructural parameters. It is observed that the stacking fault probability increases with combined solute concentration (Cd + Zn). The root mean square microstrain 〈ϵ2〉12 and effective particle size De along [111] and [100] are found to be anisotropic. The particle size due to faulting DSF, the dislocation density ρ and the parameter γ/μ (γ, stacking fault energy; μ, shear modulus) of these alloys are also evaluated.
