High-spin states have been studied in neutron-rich nuclei produced in deep-inelastic collisions between a pulsed beam of Pb ions and a U target. The structure of nuclei such as Hg, Pb and Bi has revealed new information on the couplings of single-particle states to each other and to the octupole-vibrational phonon, essential input to the nuclear shell model. In addition, the first observations of high-spin states in U, U and U are compared to recent results for neighbouring plutonium nuclei.

High‐K states in the region of 177Lu have been studied using multi‐nucleon transfer reactions with 136Xe beams and Gammasphere. Results include identification of the predicted 5‐quasiparticle Kπ = 39/2 − isomer in 177Lu, a 7‐quasiparticle Kπ = 49/2 + isomer in 179Ta with an anomalously fast decay, and numerous other examples in a range of Yb close to stability. The results are discussed in the context of the expectations for multi‐quasiparticle states near Z = 72 and the factors which may both govern isomer formation and also give an insight into K‐purity, specifically chance degeneracies, and statistical mixing above the yrast line.

The nucleus Ge-68 has been studied by gamma-ray spectroscopy following its population at high spin in the reaction Ca-40(S-32,4p) Ge-68. The reaction channel was selected with the Microball array and gamma rays were detected with the Gammasphere array. The level scheme is very complex, reflecting the many different, and presumably mixed, excitation modes in this nucleus. Nevertheless, there appear to be some simplifications in the spin range above 18 (h) over bar where we have identified a superdeformed band and several terminating bands. The results are compared with a cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model without pairing.
