Compact directive UWB antennas are presented in this paper. We propose an optimization of the F-probe fed triangular patch antenna. The new design achieves an impedance bandwidth of 69% (3–6.15 GHz) and presents good radiation characteristics over the whole impedance bandwidth. The average gain is 6.1 dB. A time-domain study has been performed to characterize the antenna behavior in case a UWB pulse is used. Finally, we propose an alternative solution to facilitate the manufacturing process using metallized foam technology. It also improves the robustness of the antenna as well as reducing its cost.

In this paper, we present a frequency tunable antenna suitable for Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld applications. Due to the narrow operating frequency band of the antenna derived from a monopole coupled loop antenna, a tuning system has been proposed to sweep the narrow band on a large frequency range in order to cover the DVB-H frequency bandwidth [470-702] MHz. We provide results of this antenna mounted on a circuit board simulating a terminal handset.

Two UWB antennas have been presented and compared. Classical parameters, as the impedance matching or the maximum level of gain in E-plane and H-plane, have been used. But in order to characterize their transient behaviour, special 2D-view of radiation patterns and phase have been produced. In addition, the transmitted pulse shape is analysed in several directions and compared with the pulse exciting the antenna. This study clearly shows that the wide slot antenna is less dispersive than the planar cone structure. The measured results will be presented during the conference.

A UWB stripline slot antenna is presented in frequency and in time domain. This structure is studied with and without filtering of the 5-6 GHz band. Experiments are carried out to investigate its return loss, its radiation behavior, and its time domain response. The antenna offers a 125% impedance bandwidth. Moreover its 108% radiation bandwidth covers the UWB band with a linear radiated far field phase.

Microstrip antennas are attractive for various applications: easy to fabricate and integrate, compact, well-known and controlled. Even so, they are inescapably narrow band, which remains a definite drawback for numerous systems emerging, for example in communication and sensor areas. Nowadays, the need of broadband antennas is constantly growing. That is why many solutions are studied to increase the microstrip antennas bandwidth. Using a probe of a specific shape to feed the antenna is a particularly interesting solution. Previous studies have shown promising results, using an L-shaped or an F-shaped probe with a rectangular or triangular patch antenna mounted on a finite ground plane, using a low permittivity thick substrate [1, 2, 3, 4]. The maximum bandwidth obtained was 64 % (VSWR < 2). In this paper, we present a new design of an E-probe fed triangular patch antenna. Thus a parametric study has been achieved showing the influence on the impedance matching by varying the height of the patch and the height of one of the horizontal strips. The results allow to find an optimal design, which has been fabricated and compared to the simulated one.
