First observation of excitation of surface electromagnetic waves (SEW) is reported in the reststrahlen region in for biaxial crystal KTiOPO4 (KTP) using a tunable CO2 laser around 10 µm, and for CaF2, BaF2, MgO (cubic crystals), and LiNbO3 (uniaxial crystal) in the far IR using ith a free-electron laser. The parameters of SEW propagation in these crystals have been obtained by the interference method of SEW phase spectroscopy, and the possibility of determining the complex dielectric permittivity of crystals from the SEW propagation parameters demonstrated in the range of SEW existence.

The example of 4-n-octadecylphenol Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films on a copper surface is used to show the possibility of measuring IR absorption spectra of thin dielectric films on a metal grating surface by means of surface electromagnetic wave (SEW) spectroscopy. Some methodological aspects of the use of composite surface electromagnetic wave waveguides for thin-film FT-IR spectroscopy are discussed.

Isotope structure in the spectra of the LiLuF4·Ho3+ single crystal was found by high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy. This structure is shown to be connected with the isotopic disorder in the lithium sublattice.

The present work was performed in order to extend the study of the relative intensities of lines within the isotope structure to other spectral transitions of different symmetry, especially of B1 yields E symmetry, and to study in more detail the widths and shapes of lines due to impurity centers with different lithium isotope composition, using the better resolution of a diode laser spectrometer (1 (DOT) 10-4 cm-1), all this being important for quantitative isotopic composition analyses.
