Abstract The first identification of gamma-rays from excited states of the 85 Mo and 88 Ru nuclei is reported, together with a short discussion of the evolution of the nuclear structure along the N = Z and the N = 43, 44 lines.

High spin states of146Dy above the 10+ isomer have been identified by means ofγ- recoil andγ}-γ coincidences through the reaction90Zr(58Ni, 2pat a bombarding energy of 250 Me V. The level scheme is discussed in terms of the coupling of 2h11/2protons to the N=80 core vibrations.

The level scheme of the {ital N}=78 nucleus {sup 140}Sm has been investigated via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy using the {sup 114}Cd({sup 30}Si, 4{ital n}) reaction. States up to {ital I}=22 and {ital E}{sub {ital x}}=8101 keV have been established. The level structure above the known isomeric 10{sup +} states is discussed in terms of the coupling between the valence particles or holes and the {ital N}=78 and {ital N}=80 cores.

High-spin states in130Sm were populated in the reaction114Cd(29Si,4n) at a bombarding energy of 128 MeV. Subsequent de-excitation was studied using γ-ray spectroscopic methods. The change of the level patterns in the odd-even nuclei around N=78 is discussed.

An in-beam γ-ray study performed with the114Cd(30Si,p3n) reaction has established the high-spin states up to 5 MeV excitation energy and I=(21)ħ in the N=79 nucleus140Pm. The low energy part of the level scheme shows both positive and negative parity states which are interpreted as single particle excitations in the 2d5/2 and 1h11/2 orbitals. The level scheme is in qualitative agreement with the coupling of the odd particles to the known yrast levels of the appropriate core nuclei.
