BackgroundDespite the importance of collecting individual data of socioeconomic status (SES) in epidemiological oral health surveys with children, this procedure relies on the parents as respondents. Therefore, type of school (public or private schools) could be used as an alternative indicator of SES, instead of collecting data individually. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of the variable type of school as an indicator of socioeconomic status as a substitute of individual data in an epidemiological survey about dental caries in Brazilian preschool children.MethodsThis study followed a cross-sectional design, with a random sample of 411 preschool children aged 1 to 5 years, representative of Catalão, Brazil. A calibrated examiner evaluated the prevalence of dental caries and parents or guardians provided information about several individual socioeconomic indicators by means of a semi-structured questionnaire. A multilevel approach was used to investigate the association among individual socioeconomic variables, as well as the type of school, and the outcome.ResultsWhen all significant variables in the univariate analysis were used in the multiple model, only mothers schooling and household income (individual socioeconomic variables) presented significant associations with presence of dental caries, and the type of school was not significantly associated. However, when the type of school was used alone, children of public school presented significantly higher prevalence of dental caries than those enrolled in private schools.ConclusionsThe type of school used as an alternative indicator for socioeconomic status is a feasible predictor for caries experience in epidemiological dental caries studies involving preschool children in Brazilian context.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the retention of glass ionomer sealant, Vitro Molar(r) (DFL) and Ketac Molar Easy Mix(r) (3 m ESPE) as pit and fissure sealants on first permanent molars, fully or partially erupted. Methods: The study sample consisted of 412 molars, among 110 children. The sealant retention was evaluated after 6 months of the application. Results: The results were collected through digital photographs and the retention results were assessed by the following System: score 0 - total retention; score 1 - sealant present in more than 50% of the pit and fissure system; score 2 - sealant present in less than 50% of the pit and fissure system; score 3 - missing sealant. Regarding the presence of the sealants in less than 50% of the occlusal surface, lower percentages were found for the two materials used as follows: score score 2 - Vitro Molar(r) (9,52% examiner 1 and 11.9% examiner 2) and score 2 - Ketac Molar Easy Mix(r)(9.52% examiner 1 and 10.71% examiner 2). Approximately 90% of the teeth sealed with Ketac Molar Easy Mix(r)or Vitro Molar(r) presented total loss (score 3). Thus, there was no statistical difference between the materials and between the examiners (p>0.05).Conclusion: Therefore it was concluded that the sealant retention in the studied population was not satisfactory for any of the materials used. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the retention of glass ionomer sealant, Vitro Molar® (DFL) and Ketac Molar Easy Mix® (3 m ESPE) as pit and fissure sealants on first permanent molars, fully or partially erupted. O software estatistico utilizado foi o SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) na versao 15. To evaluate the efficacy of the ecological toothbrush and jua on dental biofilm removal in children treated at a homeless shelter in the city of Caruaru-PE, Brazil. Method: Eighty children were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=20), being a control (G1): conventional toothbrush and conventional dentifrice (CT+CD); and three experimental groups: G2: conventional toothbrush and jua (CT+J), G3: ecological toothbrush and conventional dentifrice (ET+CD) and G4: ecological toothbrush and jua (ET+J). The study comprehended four stages: an initial evaluation of the dental biofilm index and three evaluations at intervals of 15, 30 and 45 days. The children received the hygiene kits corresponding to the group to which they belonged. After use of the methods, new dental biofilm indexes were obtained according to the pre-established periods. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and the following tests were used: F test (repeated-measures ANOVA) and Students t-test with equal and unequal variances. A level of significance of 5% was adopted and the SPSS statistical software (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 15; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) was used. Results: In all groups, the dental biofilm index presented the highest means in the initial evaluation. Significant differences were found in comparison with the initial evaluation (p less than 0.001) for all groups. There was statistically significant difference between the control group and all other groups. Conclusion: Although the alternative methods presented lower efficacy than the conventional method, there was also a reduction in the dental biofilm indexes, presenting as effective and inexpensive options.(AU)
