Testing a Level Versus an Interactional View of Career Indecision

Judy M. Chartrand; Wayne F. Martin; Steven B. Robbins; Garrett J. McAuliffe; James W. Pickering; James Calliotte

A cluster analysis procedure was used to test a continuum versus an interactional view of career indecision. It was hypothesized that cluster groups would differ across cognitive and affective dimensions of career indecision. Clients experiencing career decisional problems were identified using a sample of college students from career planning courses (N = 325). Responses to the Career Factors Inventory (CFI; Chartrand, Robbins, Morrill, & Boggs, 1990), which measures both cognitive and affective dimensions of career indecision, were cluster analyzed using a disjoint nonhierarchical procedure. A four-cluster configuration, which revealed interactions between cognitive and affective dimensions of career indecision, was identified as the optimal cluster solution. This cluster solution was validated and results were discussed in terms of integrating career decisional typologies into a theoretical framework.

Student Changes, Program Influences, and Adult Development in One Program of Counselor Training: An Exploratory Inductive Inquiry

Garrett J. McAuliffe

This qualitative study explored how students in 1 program changed as a result of their professional preparation experience. We interviewed 15 counseling students via one-to-one interviews and a focus group. Students were asked how they had changed and what had influenced those changes in their educational experience. Responses were clustered with the assistance of a text analysis computer program. Three broad change themes were named (1) increased reflexivity, (2) increased autonomy, and (3) capacity for dialogue. Four program influences were also identified. They are providing students with (1) experiences in social construction of knowledge, (2) experiential learning, (3) opportunities for independent thinking, and (4) a supportive environment. Connections to adult-development themes and specific instructional strategies that are suggested by the data are named.

Reflective visual journaling during art therapy and counselling internships: a qualitative study

Sarah P. Deaver; Garrett J. McAuliffe

This qualitative multiple case study explored four art therapy students’ and four counselling students’ responses to visual journaling during their internships. They maintained their journals throughout one 15‐week academic semester, and were interviewed four times over the course of the study. Data consisted of transcribed interviews and photographs of participants’ journal imagery. Data analysis yielded three overarching patterns: The Internship Experience Overall, The Visual Journal Experience, and Journaling Process. The visual journal facilitated the process of reflection. Participants gained insights into aspects of their experience through making art, combining it with written text and reflecting upon their journal entries. In addition, they used their visual journals for case conceptualization, addressing countertransference and stress reduction. Whereas all of the participants deemed the visual journal valuable, counselling interns had initial difficulty with visual thinking. The participants considered the combination of artmaking and responsive writing to be a particularly effective aspect of their experience.

Factors Impacting Counselor Competency with Sexual Minority Intimate Partner Violence Victims

Ryan Hancock; Garrett J. McAuliffe; Kathleen Levingston

Grounded theory procedures were combined with a queer theory perspective to examine what factors promote counselor competency with sexual minority intimate partner violence victims. Ten counselors participated in two rounds of individual interviews. Results indicated that counselor competency building for work with this population occurred during and after graduate counseling programs. Analysis of the data identified specific desirable counselor traits, and useful training activities were identified to assist with developing counselor competency. The authors also discuss implications for clinical practice, counseling supervision, professional associations, service seminars, and counselor educators.

Using Art-Based Multicultural Interventions to Reduce Counselor Trainees' Ethnocentrism

Cheryl Shiflett; Garrett J. McAuliffe; Sarah P. Deaver

This qualitative research explored the use of the Cultural De-Centering Activity-Visual (CDCA-V) as a means of challenging culture-centrism in a graduate-level multicultural counseling course. Results indicated that the CDCA-V provoked students to question their received norms about religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and/or social class.

Developmental Level as a Predictor of Counseling Skills

Margaret Jensen; Garrett J. McAuliffe; Renee Seay

What is the relationship between the developmental characteristics of counseling interns and their counseling skills? Thirty master’s-level counseling students in their fieldwork phase were rated by their supervisors on both a measure of developmental level and counseling skills. Results indicated that the construct of Self/Other Awareness was the strongest predictor of counseling skills level. Based on this finding, it can be concluded that counselor supervisees possessing this awareness appear better equipped to deal with the complex problemsolving and social interactions required for successfully counseling clients. Authors Notes We believe we have not met criteria required with the current changes/revisions. Dr. Webber, thank you for the extension and understanding as well as your expression of concern for Dr. Seays husbands situation. Dr. Jensen
