Propaganda and war

Linda Steiner; Garth Jowett

What is propaganda? As discussed here, propaganda is a form of psychological persuasion that is pitched to the masses— the body politic. On the other hand, psychological persuasion is a collection of psychological techniques constructed so as to change people’s beliefs and attitudes. It operates by influencing the targets of some “message” (a product advertisement) to take the originator’s point of view as well as to engage in some course of action (buy a product). An instance of psychological persuasion is the multibillion dollar advertising industry that entices consumers to buy advertised products and use them in their daily lives. It is psychological because the goal of the message is to change people’s beliefs and attitudes and to do so in a way that affects their subsequent behavior. For instance, a sporty vehicle is marketed to a consumer in a way that will make him or her feel more masculine or feminine and exude sex appeal and she or he will want to drive the car daily to impress others. The Cold War and the United States Information Agency: American propaganda and public diplomacy, 1945–1989

Garth Jowett

This book is one of those major contributions to a field of study that will fundamentally alter current perceptions and guide all future research efforts. Nicholas Cull’s majestic history of the United States Information Agency (USIA) in the years 1945–1989 will undoubtedly cause scholars who are interested in diplomatic history, propaganda studies and the history of communications to re-evaluate currently held perceptions of the role and importance of this enigmatic agency of the US Government. For too long the history of the USIA has been the province of former employees (usually disgruntled in some fashion), scholars with limited access to the records and the individuals whose actions dictated the way the agency functioned under various administrations. After 12 years of research, thought and revision, and bolstered by more than 100 primary interviews, Cull has produced a work of immense scope, which is both highly accessible in style and presentation, and also structured in a fashion that provides a workable analytical matrix for the reader. First and foremost,
