Metallocarboranes That Exhibit Novel Chemical Features: A virtually unlimited variety of structural and dynamic features are observed in metallocarborane chemistry

M. Frederick Hawthorne; Gary B. Dunks

Among the myriad transition metal and main group complexes of ligands derived from carboranes, some exhibit unique structural variations and novel dynamic behavior.

Isomeric B10C2H13– ions derived from the direct reduction of B10C2H12

Gary B. Dunks; Richard J. Wiersema; M. Frederick Hawthorne

The direct reduction of 1,2-B10C2H12 with sodium metal in tetrahydrofuran produced the B10C2H122– ion, treatment of B10C2H122– ion with water afforded two isomeric B10C2H13– ions, the least stable of which could be thermally converted to the more stable; analysis of the n.m.r. spectra of these B10C2H13– ions indicate that they may include a methylene type polyhedral carbon atom; pyrolysis of [Me4N][B10C2H13] produced Me3N·BH2B10C2H11 and [Me4N][7,9-B9C2H12].
