This paper analyses the present syllabus used in Brunei schools. It questions the introduction and timing of school subjects, particularly in relation to which language medium is used for teaching. Assumptions about threshold levels, subject order and age are considered before an alternative syllabus is suggested. While principally devised for Brunei, the arguments for this alternative syllabus must also contain elements that would be appropriate for any country that wishes to adopt a bilingual education system.

The official language of Brunei Darussalam is Bahasa Melayu (Malay) yet the country is diverse both linguistically and culturally. The country has a long tradition of selective English medium education and since 1984 English has been available to all. This paper looks at three facets of language and language education in Brunei. Firstly it examines the relationship between Malay and the minority languages. Secondly the relationship between English and Malay in the unplanned environment is analysed. The last section looks at the place of bilingual education in the community and suggests future directions for the countrys education policy.

This chapter provides a brief outline of Borneo-related research that has been conducted at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and in particular at the Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) within the university. It includes an analysis of earlier Borneo research conducted through UBD and a description of the current relevant research clusters and topics. The chapter explains the role of the institute in Borneo, in particular its participation in the Borneo Research Council and the creation of a Borneo Studies Network that links the IAS with other research institutes across Borneo. Much of the research that has been conducted thus far in the institute is reflected in the IAS Working Paper series, and a description of the content of Borneo-themed papers is included. The IAS is also working on a book series, as this collection attests, and that is also explained, as is the weekly seminar series that has become an integral part of the institute’s life.
