Orthotopic allotransplantation of the pancreas

F. Largiadèr; Gary W. Lyons; Francisco Hidalgo; Ronald H. Dietzman; Richard C. Lillehei

Abstract A technic for orthotopic allotransplantation of the whole pancreas (including duodenum) has been successfully carried out with preservation of both endocrine and exocrine function of the transplant. The operative technic is described in detail and preliminary results with twenty-five transplantation procedures are given. Mean survival time of the dogs after orthotopic transplantation was five and a half days (range from four to nine days). Factors affecting the general condition of the recipient proved to be more decisive for survival than local complications.

Renal transplantation in a patient with Wegener's granulomatosis

Gary W. Lyons; William G. Lindsay

Abstract Wegeners granulomatosis, a disease of multi-system involvement, has been uniformly fatal until antimetabolite drugs were introduced into its management. Effective control of the systemic manifestations by immunosuppression justifies renal transplantation as a logical extension of therapy in a select group of patients with end stage renal disease.

Individual in vitro organ susceptibility to hyperbaric oxygen.

Gary W. Lyons; William G. Manax; Felix Largiader; Ronald H. Diezman; Richard C. Lillehei

Summary o 1. Preservation of whole organs (kidney, heart, small bowel, and lung) has been investigated in relation to individual in vitro susceptibility to hyperbarie oxygen. 2. The lung, in sharp contrast to other organs, does not tolerate pressures above 3.0 OHP. 3. The critical oxygen tension required for successful preservation appears related to duration, intensity, and core depth of the individual organ.

Percutaneous method for arterial and venous monitoring.

Kit V. Arom; Gary W. Lyons

A new technic for monitoring blood gases or venous and arterial pressure is described. Catheters are inserted by percutaneous puncture and guided into the femoral and iliac vessels with minimal manipulation. This rapid, simple technic has been used in more than 100 patients without a major complication.
