The rich platelet plasma (RPP) and indiferenciate mesenchimal cells (IMCs), or stem cells, have been widely studied because of their high potential of osteoinduction in bone grafts. However, the utilization of RPP and IMCs must be done following correct methodology of isolation and use. The inappropriate methodology can be a determinant factor of its efficacy on bone grafts and can explain some controversial results of its utilization in bone grafts.

The effect of isotonic and hypertonic solutions on serum levels of sodium, chloride and potassium and cardiac (CR) and respiratory rates (RR) of hypovolemic horses were studied. Fifteen horses weighting from 390 to 475kg, aging from four to 18-years-old were submitted to bleeding of 2% of body weight and divided in three groups: 7.5% NaCl hypertonic saline in 5% glucose (GSH), 0.9% NaCl isotonic saline and control group (GC). Serum electrolytes were evaluated before (T0) and after bleeding (T1) and after the administration of the solutions between 20 and 30 minutes (T2), 60 and 70 minutes (T3) and 120 and 130 minutes (T4). After T0, CR and RR increased while serum sodium, chloride, potassium were not affected. After the treatment, the clinical variables improved in GSI and GSH as compared to GC. The Na levels increased in GSH at T2 being higher than T3 and T4 while chloride and potassium concentrations did not change. The hypertonic and isotonic solutions safely corrected the hypovolemia of the horses, without altering significantly the electrolyte balance.

E-mail:[email protected] general anesthesia and arterial pressure control, twelve horses were submittedsimultaneously to intraluminal distension and venous ischemia of jejune for 2 hours, followed by 12 hours of reperfusion. Six horses were treated with intravenous 2% glutamine(50mg/kg), and six others were treated with the same volume of saline solution 1h afterthe beginning of ischemia and 6 hours after reperfusion. Intestinal samples were collectedbefore and after 2 hours of ischemia and after 2 and 12 hours of reperfusion, and weresubmitted to hystopatological analyses, ultrastructural examination, measurement of areaand number of villi per mm

Incisional complications after equine midline laparotomy have an incidence of 35 to 87.5% and lead an increase in the convalescence period or to death. Predisposed factors to these complications are little approached in the equine medicine literature and consist of inherent factors to the patient, surgery, anesthesia and postoperative period. Preoperative cares, size of the incision, surgeon clothes, the choice of the suture material and equine clinical and behaviour conditions may be considered and well known in order to decrease the incisional complications after the midline laparotomy.

This review discusses anatomical, histophysiological and pathological aspects of the suspensory ligament (SL) of metacarpal/metatarsal joint in the horse. This knowledge is important to aid in diagnosing and treating the SL diseases in the athlete horses, considering that affected animals remain on training activities under palliative treatments that insure pain relieve, but do not guarantee fully and definitively welfare of the horses.

Eight equines and one mule with odontomaxillaries and mandibularies fractures were treated with different osteosynthesis modified techniques, consisting of cerclages with or without tension bands, neutralization plates, and intraosseous pin applied by a methodology which was not found in the literature. The surgery procedures in equides were performed with the animals in stand position under physical contention, sedation, or neuroleptoanalgesy and regional nerve block. All animals were able to eat voluntarily in the immediate post-operatory time and had good bone recuperation.

The ultra-structural alterations in the equine jejune villi caused by intraluminal distension were analyzed. Six animals had a jejunum segment distended with saline solution. The intraluminal pressure was maintained in 25cm of water for 2h. The mucosal samples collected (0h, 2h of distension, 2h and 12h of decompression) were analyzed with scan electronic microscopy (SEM). The area and the perimeter of the villi, as well as their density, were analyzed using a specific software for image analysis (Image J). The luminal distention and decompression induced an increase on villi dimensions (area and perimeter). This ultrastructural alteration occurred just 12h after decompression, possibily due to edema caused by the increase of vascular permeability resulting from ischemia and reperfusion of the intestine mucosa. The intraluminal distension of the equine jejune caused a delayed increase of the intestine villi dimensions.

Four cases of periapical disease (PC) in equines submitted to apicoectomy and dental extraction were studied. The diagnosis was based on anamnesis, physical and oral examination and radiology. The apicoectomy was not effective due of the lack of endodontic treatment. The dental extraction was the better treatment, despite of the difficulty of complete cure of the infection. The PC can have other causes, beyond of those classified as primary and secondary by the literature.
