Seismic Response Control of Dome Structure Subjected to Multi-Support Earthquake Excitation

Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang

Abstract Spatial structures as like dome structure have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately analyze dynamic characteristics and effectively control of seismic response of spatial structure subjected to multi-supported excitation. In this study, star dome structure that is subjected to multi-supported excitation was used as an example spatial structure. The response of the star dome structure under multiple support excitation are analyzed by means of the pseudo excitation method. Pseudo excitation method shows that the structural response is divided into two parts, ground displacement and structural dynamic response due to ground motion excitation. And the application of passive tuned mass damper(TMD) to seismic response control of star dome structures has been investigated. From this numerical analysis, it is shown that the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support seismic excitation are different from those of spatial structure under unique excitation. And it is reasonable to install TMD to the dominant points of each mode. And it is found that the passive TMD could effectively reduce the seismic responses of dome structure subjected to multi-supported excitation.

Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang

Vibration control devices are classified into passive, semi-active and active device. TMD(Tuned Mass Damper) is one of the passive control device that is mainly used to reduce vibration level of building structure and bridge structure. In this study, the application of passive tuned mass damper(TMD) to seismic response control of dome structures has been investigated. Because star dome structure has primary characteristics of dome structures, star dome structure was used as an example dome structure that is subjected to horizontal or vertical seismic loads. From this numerical analysis, it is shown that seismic response are influenced by vibration modes and it is reasonable to install TMD to the dominant points of each mode. And it is found that the passive TMD could effectively reduce the seismic responses of dome structure.

Natural Vibration Period of Small-scaled Arch Structure by Shaking Table Test

Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang

Large spatial structures can not easily predict the dynamic behavior due to the lack of construction and design practices. The spatial structures are generally analyzed through the numerical simulation and experimental test in order to investigate the seismic response of large spatial structures. In the case of analysis for seismic response of large spatial structure, the many studies by the numerical analysis was carried out, researches by the shaking table test are very rare. In this study, a shaking table test of a small-scale arch structure was conducted and the dynamic characteristics of arch structure are analyzed. And the dynamic characteristics of arch structures are investigated according to the various column cross-section and length. It is found that the natural vibration periods of the small-scaled arch structure that have large column stiffness are very similar to the natural vibration period of the non-column arch structure. And in case of arch structure with large column stiffness, primary natural frequency period by numerical analysis is very similar to the primary natural frequency period of by shaking table test. These are because the dynamic characteristics of the roof structure are affected by the column stiffness of the spatial structure.

Yu-Jin Yu; Keun-Young Seok; Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang

The purpose of this study is intended to determine the validity of shear reinforcement by evaluating flexural performance in the hollow slab. The hollow slab is relatively light and second moment of inertia is large. Due to these characteristics, it can be used to slab system efficiently. Therefore the prediction of the structural behaviors is very important because of decrease of shear and flexural strength which is caused by hollow section of slab interior. In this study, the flexural test were performed to analyze the flexural capacity of the hollow slab w/ or w/o shear reinforcement. A total of six full scale specimens were tested. These specimens have three cases of reinforcing bar ratio, 0.009, 0.018 and 0.024. To verify the flexural behavior such as ultimate load, load-deflection and crack pattern, the flexural experiment were tested by using loading frame. Experimental results have shown that the flexural behavior are depend on the reinforcing bar ratio. Also the hollow slab with shear reinforcement have shown flexural behavior. Therefore, it is appropriate that the hollow slab is reinforced by shear reinforcement to improve the flexural performance of the hollow slab.

Sang-Wook Park; Keun-Young Seok; Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang

Hollow slab and half slab are applied to many structures in accordance with increase of demand for high-rise buildings because of recent phenomenon of urban overcrowding. In case of using a hollow slab as flooring system, the weight of slab would be reduced so that economical construction could be possible. Using the half slab in floor system makes the deflection of half slab relatively less than general slab as well as it is more advantageous for minimizing cracking. So if these two systems apply at the same time, the better floor system could be created due to the advantages of them. Accordingly, a few researches are conducted about hollow half slab which has advantages of these two floor systems. Therefore, in this study, the flexural capacity of one-way hollow slab and one-way hollow half slab are analyzed and compared for usability of one-way hollow half slab.

Seismic Response of Arch Structure Subjected to Different Ground Motion

Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang

Spatial structures have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately analyze dynamic characteristics and seismic response of spatial structure for seismic design of spatial structure. An arch structure is used as an example structure because it has primary characteristics of spatial structures. Multiple support excitation may be subjected to supports of a spatial structure because ground condition of spatial structures is different. In this study, the response analysis of the arch structure under multiple support excitation and simple support excitation is studied. By means of the pseudo excitation method, the seismic response is analyzed for long span spatial structure. It shows that the structural response is divided into two parts, ground displacement and structural dynamic response due to ground motion excitation. It is known that the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support excitation and simple support excitation are the different in some case. Therefore, it has to be necessary to analyze the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support excitation because the spatial structure supports may be different.

Application of MR damper for Vibration Control of Adjacent Buildings

Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang

In recently, sky-bridge are often applied to high-rised adjacent buildings for pedestrian bridge. the seisnic response control of adjacent buildings have been studied and magneto-rheological(MR) fluid dampers have been applied to seismic response control. In this study, vibration control effect of the MR damper connected adjacent buildings has been investigated. Adjacent building structures with different natural frequencies were used as example structures. Two typed of control methods, displacement based or velocity based, are applied to determinate control force of MR damper. In this numerical analysis, it has been shown that displacement-based control algorithm is more effective than velocity-based control algorithm for seismic response control of adjacent buildings. And, when displacement-based control method is applied to control of adjacent buildings, the control of building occurred large displacement is more efficient in reducing the seismic response.

Joo-Won Kang; Jun-Ho Lim; Seoung-Hun Chae; Gee-Cheol Kim; Keun-Young Seok

Considering that the weight of a hollow slab system is not increased with an incremental increase in its thickness, and that the flexural stiffness of a hollow slab is not significantly lower than that of a general slab, there has been a growing need for hollow slab system, because long span structures are in great demand. In a long span structure, the problem of vibration of floor slabs frequently occurs, and the dynamic characteristics of a hollow slab system are quite different from the conventional floor system. It is required to investigate the safety and the serviceability of hollow slab. Therefore, there exists a necessity for accurate vibration analysis. Hollow slab should be modeled by refined mesh for accurate vibration analysis. For the efficiency of the Eigenvalue Analysis, an equivalent plate slab model when can relatively precisely represent the dynamic behavior of a one-way hollow slab system is used. In conclusion, equivalent plate models relatively precisely presented the dynamic characteristics of one-way hollows.

Optimal Design of Passive TMD for Seismic Behavior Control of Spacial Structures

Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang

The studies of seismic response control are mainly conducted on rahmen structure until now. Spatial structures have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. So, the results of these studies are very limited for vibration control and seismic design of spatial structures. TMD(Tuned Mass Damper) is one of the vibration control device that is mainly used to reduce the vibration level of high-rised building, bridge or stadium structure. In this study, an arch structure was used as an example structure because it has primary characteristics of spatial structures and the seismic behaviour of spatial structures may fundamentally differ from the conventional building structures. So, the vibration control performance is evaluated according to the change of TMD mass and TMD location. It is reasonable to install TMD at the quarter point that is dominant mode vector of 1st mode, And it is appropriate that TMD mass ratio is 2% in the seismic response control of arch structure.

Gee-Cheol Kim; Joo-Won Kang; Hyun-Su Kim

Retractable roof system is one of the special feature in stadium or complex structure. And this retractable roof system makes possible to use spacial structure all-weather. This retractable roof system is able to classified into overlapping, parallel movement and folding system. Moving load, impact load, inertial or braking loads, these dynamic loads induced by movements of retractable roof system. So it is necessary to analysis of spacial structures are subjected to these dynamic loads. Dynamic loads that are induced by the retractable roof movements can be applied to moving mass method or moving force method. But, moving force method is appropriate because the retractable roof movements is slow relatively. In this paper, new application method of moving forces induced by the retractable roof movements is proposed. And vibration analysis of spacial structures are executed by using the proposed method. This proposed equivalent moving force can be easily applied to spacial structure that is subjected to dynamic loads induced by movement of the retractable roof system.
