Habitat Use and Ranging of Wild Bonobos (Pan paniscus) at Wamba

The relationship between vegetation and ranging patterns of wild bonobos at Wamba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, was examined. Via Landsat data, we distinguished three types of vegetation—dry forest, swamp forest, and disturbed forest—at Wamba. The home ranges of the study groups changed considerably from year to year, due mainly to intergroup relationships. The population density of each group varied between 1.4 and 2.5 individuals per km2and was lowest during a period of population increase. Home ranges consisted mainly of dry forest. The bonobos used dry forest more frequently than the other forest types, though they also used swamp and disturbed forest almost every day. The latter types of forest seemed to be important resources for the bonobos, owing to the abundant herbaceous plants that are rich in protein and constantly available. The bonobos tended to use dry forest more frequently in the rainy season than in the relatively dry season, probably because the favored fruits in the dry forest were mostly available in the rainy season. There was no seasonal difference in the size of the daily ranging area.

Seasonal Changes in Fruit Production and Party Size of Bonobos at Wamba

Because chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) have a unique fission-fusion social structure, many researchers have investigated the nature of foraging parties. They have reported that chimpanzees form foraging parties whose size and sex composition change flexibly, and that the sizes of parties may vary according to fluctuations in fruit abundance, the number of estrous females, or both (Wrangham 1977, Ghiglieri 1984, Isabyre-Basuta 1988, Stanford et al. 1994, Boesch 1996, Matsumoto-Oda et al. 1998, Newton-Fisher et al. 2000, Boesch and Boesch-Achermann 2000, Hashimoto et al. 2001). Researchers have also reported that females tend to join mixed-sex parties less frequently than males do, and that this likely occurs because ranging in large mixed-sex parties may not be beneficial to the feeding activities of females (Wrangham 1979, 2000, Janson and Goldsmith 1995, Williams et al. 2002, Reynolds 2005). The closest relative of chimpanzees, bonobos (P. paniscus), have a similar fissionfusion social structure. However, the size and composition of the parties are different from those of chimpanzees. Previous studies of bonobos at Wamba and Lomako in the Democratic Republic of the Congo showed that bonobos form larger and more stable parties (Kuroda 1979, Kano 1982, 1992, Furuichi 1987, White 1988), and that the size of parties may be influenced by fruit abundance to a lesser extent. This is probably because either the seasonal changes in fruit abundance are small or because some foods are available year-round (Kano 1982, Kano and Mulavwa 1984, White 1998, Malenky and Stiles 1991, Malenky and Wrangham 1994, Chapman et al. 1994). Long-Term Studies on Wild Bonobos at Wamba, Luo Scientific Reserve, D. R. Congo: Towards the Understanding of Female Life History in a Male-Philopatric Species

Long-term studies on wild bonobos began at Wamba, in the current Luo Scientific Reserve, in 1973. Except for several interruptions due to political instability and civil war, we have been conducting studies of identified individual bonobos over 35 years, providing valuable data on their population dynamics and life history. Although the number of groups and number of individuals in the northern section of the reserve decreased by half during the interruptions of the study, the number of members of the main study group has steadily increased since 2002 when we resumed the study. Our long-term data demonstrated the male-philopatric structure of the group. There is no confirmed case of emigration of males from the study group, and no case of immigration of males into the group. On the other hand, all females born into the study group disappeared by the age of 10 years, and females with estimated ages of 6–13 years immigrated into the study group. These ages of intergroup transfer are much earlier than those reported for chimpanzees. Exceptional cases of immigration of two adult males and two adult females with offspring occurred right after the war. It is likely that remnants of extinct groups joined the study group. Such integration of members of foreign groups highlights the peaceful nature of bonobo society. The study group is characterized by an extremely high tendency for female aggregation. Various factors, including high density of food patches, female initiative in ranging, prolonged estrus of females, and high social status of females, seem to be responsible for the high attendance ratio of females in mixed-sex parties. Our long-term observations therefore provided evidence for interesting behavioral contrasts with chimpanzees.

The first chimpanzee sanctuary in Japan: an attempt to care for the "surplus" of biomedical research.

This article specifically examines several aspects of the human–captive chimpanzee bond and the effort to create the first chimpanzee sanctuary in Japan. We discuss our ethical responsibility for captive chimpanzees that have been used in biomedical research. On April 1, 2007, the Chimpanzee Sanctuary Uto (CSU) was established as the first sanctuary for retired laboratory chimpanzees in Japan. This initiative was the result of the continuous efforts by members of Support for African/Asian Great Apes (SAGA), and the Great Ape Information Network to provide a solution to the large chimpanzee colony held in biomedical facilities. However, the cessation of invasive biomedical studies using chimpanzees has created a new set of challenges because Japan lacks registration and laws banning invasive ape experiments and lacks a national policy for the life‐long care of retired laboratory chimpanzees. Therefore, CSU has initiated a relocation program in which 79 retired laboratory chimpanzees will be sent to domestic zoos and receive life‐long care. By the end of 2009, the number of chimpanzees living at CSU had decreased from 79 to 59 individuals. A nationwide network of care facilities and CSU to provide life‐long care of retired laboratory chimpanzees is growing across Japan. This will result in humane treatment of these research animals. Infection during Infancy and Long Incubation Period of Leprosy Suggested in a Case of a Chimpanzee Used for Medical Research

ABSTRACT The length of the incubation period of leprosy following Mycobacterium leprae infection has never been conclusively determined, owing to the lack of a method to demonstrate the presence of an asymptomatic infection. We report a rare case of leprosy in a chimpanzee in which a 30-year incubation period was strongly suggested by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis.

Function of peering behavior among bonobos (Pan paniscus) at Wamba, Zaire

Peering behavior (prolonged gazing within 30 cm by an animal toward another) in wild bonobos (Pan paniscus) at Wamba, Zaire, was studied. A total of 230 peering episodes were observed in various social contexts. Peering behavior was often directed from younger animals toward older ones. In particular, adult females were most frequently involved in peering, with individuals of all age-sex classes. On the other hand, male bonobos seldom took part in peering behavior. Four types of behavior patterns followed the peering behavior: (1) the peerer left; (2) the peeree left; (3) both peerer and peeree stayed but had no further social interaction; and (4) some other social interaction followed. Type (1) was the most frequent. Peering usually led to tolerance by older (dominant) animals of a younger (subordinate) animal’s subsequent actions directed towards the former. Peering was thus concluded to be a unilateral action for initiating affinitive interactions by the peerer.

Effects of Relocation and Individual and Environmental Factors on the Long-Term Stress Levels in Captive Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes): Monitoring Hair Cortisol and Behaviors.

Understanding the factors associated with the long-term stress levels of captive animals is important from the view of animal welfare. In this study, we investigated the effects of relocation in addition to individual and environmental factors related to social management on long-term stress level in group-living captive chimpanzees by examining behaviors and hair cortisol (HC). Specifically, we conducted two studies. The first compared changes in HC levels before and after the relocation of 8 chimpanzees (Study 1) and the second examined the relationship between individual and environmental factors and individual HC levels in 58 chimpanzees living in Kumamoto Sanctuary (KS), Kyoto University (Study 2). We hypothesized that relocation, social situation, sex, and early rearing conditions, would affect the HC levels of captive chimpanzees. We cut arm hair from chimpanzees and extracted and assayed cortisol with an enzyme immunoassay. Aggressive behaviors were recorded ad libitum by keepers using a daily behavior monitoring sheet developed for this study. The results of Study 1 indicate that HC levels increased during the first year after relocation to the new environment and then decreased during the second year. We observed individual differences in reactions to relocation and hypothesized that social factors may mediate these changes. In Study 2, we found that the standardized rate of receiving aggression, rearing history, sex, and group formation had a significant influence on mean HC levels. Relocation status was not a significant factor, but mean HC level was positively correlated with the rate of receiving aggression. Mean HC levels were higher in males than in females, and the association between aggressive interactions and HC levels differed by sex. These results suggest that, although relocation can affect long-term stress level, individuals’ experiences of aggression and sex may be more important contributors to long-term stress than relocation alone.

Do bonobos copulate more frequently and promiscuously than chimpanzees

The copulatory activities of bonobos (Pan paniscus) of Wamba, Zaire, were compared with those of chimpanzees (P. troglodytes schweinfurthii) of Mahale, Tanzania. The copulation rates of adult male bonobos were equal to or lower than those of adult male chimpanzees. The copulation rates of adult female bonobos were approximately equal to those of adult female chimpanzees who were in maximal genital swelling, but it should be much higher than those of the adult female chimpanzees throughout the birth interval. The copulation rates of adolescent male bonobos were lower than those of adolescent male chimpanzees, whereas the copulation rates of adolescent female bonobos were much higher than those of adolescent female chimpanzees. It was suggested that the bonobos of Wamba did not copulate more promiscuously than did the chimpanzees of Mahale. The female bonobos may show “receptivity”, whereas female chimpanzees may show rather “proceptivity”.

Oral malignancy is rare in chimpanzees. A 34‐year‐old female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) at Kumamoto Sanctuary, Japan, had developed it. Treatment is technically difficult for chimpanzees while malignant neoplasm is seemingly rising in captive populations. Widespread expert discussion, guidelines for treatment, especially for great apes in terminal stages is urgently needed.
